Samuel Hotchkiss, according to findagrave, was born 6 Mar 1682/3 in New
Haven. This date corresponds with his death record saying he was 57 when he
died. (1) He was baptized along with his three younger siblings, Mary,
Sarah and James, on 9 May 1685/6. (2) He died December 22, 1740 and an appraisal of his estate was
made January 8, 1740/1 signed by the widow "Mary Hotchkiss". As widow she
received a third of the moveable estate valued at £77.1.0
The distribution of
the land was made June 2, 1741 and again "the widow" was to receive her one
third. Daughter Abigail Hotchkiss received £84.12.2. Sarah
Sheppard received £84.12.3. Mary Goodsell received £24.16.0. The
sons named in the distribution were Samuel Hotchkiss who received £229.16.00.,
Joseph Hotchkiss who received £428.17.08, James Hotchkiss who received
£264.11.08 and Enos Hotchkiss who received £215.06.08. (3)
So we know his widow
was named Mary. She may or may not be the mother of his children.
She married October 26, 1745 to Henry Tolles. Various researchers have
named her as Mary Shepard daughter of Abraham and Judith Shepard, or Mary Peck
daughter of Timothy and Lydia Peck or Mary Chatterton, or Mary Hull. All
we know for sure is that the first wife of Samuel Hotchkiss was NOT Sarah
Bradley. She married his cousin.
Some say there may have been a first wife
named Hannah Russell who he married 10 Jan 1705 in Guilford. Dodd,
East Haven Register, 32. However, the East Haven Register lists the marriage as
Samuel Hotchkiss to Sarah Bradley. (4)
