Samuel Hotchkiss was born about 1645 in New Haven Colony. This date of birth is probably based on the fact that in 1666 he was old enough to be listed as a carpenter. (1)  He was also a Lieutenant in the French and Indian Wars. (2) Samuel married Sarah Talmadge on 18 Mar 1678/9. (3) Sarah's uncle, Major John Nash, performed the ceremony. (4)  Two years later, in 1680, the 3rd Division of New Haven was being laid out and Samuel Hotchkiss was given "4 acres excess" for his service in the war. (5) He was listed as a Proprietor of New Haven in 1685. (6) Samuel Hotchkiss and his wife Sarah Talmadge had at least six children.  There is a baptismal record for an Enos Hotchkiss with father Samuel on 5 Sep 1690. (7) This may be the last child of Samuel and Sarah Hotchkiss as she is reported to have died about 1690.
Samuel Hotchkiss remarried to Hannah Thompson, (8) possibly the widow of Matthew Moulthrop. (9) Samuel died on 29 Dec 1705 and his widow, Hannah, became the administrator of his estate. (10) The inventory taken in 1705 was valued at £1705. (6)

Biographical Details:

Hannah Thompson may have been born either in England or in the New Haven Colony.  In the will of her father, John Thompson, she was mentioned after her two brothers, John and Joseph.  Accordingly, John, Jr., was identified as oldest and, thus, as receiving a double share of the estate.  Of course, this merely implies that, according to the usual custom of primogenture prevailing at the time, he was the oldest son irrespective of whether there might have been older daughters.  Therefore, although her brother John, was almost certainly born in New Haven, it is possible that Hannah was born first, perhaps, in England, but this is not proven.  Nonetheless, Savage indicates that John Thompson arrived in the colony with a wife and several children, which might have included Hannah; however, this remains an open question.

Within this context, Hannah Thompson married Matthew Moulthrop, Jr., on June 26, 1662.  Jacobus indicates that she died in 1681.  However, Savage attributes a daughter, Keziah, born April 12, 1682, to Matthew, Jr., and Hannah Thompson Moulthrop.  Obviously, these assertions are inconsistent.  Moreover, other researchers have stated that Hannah was remarried to Samuel Hotchkiss after the death of Matthew Moulthrop, Jr.  Accordingly, she has been identified with "Widow Hannah Hotchkiss" who died January 19, 1712 (1713 N. S.) according to Dodd's East Haven Register.  However, Dodd gave her age as forty-one, which would have been much too young for Hannah Thompson, who would have probably been at least seventy.
