Thomas Broaddus, the second son of Thomas (the oldest son of the first settler),
was bred a carpenter, but after his marriage engaged in farming, in which he was
very successful. He was a man of steady habits, sound sense, and grave and
sedate deportment. He died at the advanced age of 83 years. He was twice
married. His first wife was Martha Jones, of Essex county, by whom he had three
sons, James J., Silas J., and John W., and eight daughters, Sally, Nancy,
Elizabeth, Martha, Harriet, Catharine, Emily and Martha Ellen. His second wife
was a widow Watkins, by whom he had no children.
