Johan Georg Kepplinger was baptized in the Schwaigern Lutheran Church on 27
Feb 1719. (1) He left Schwaigern, Germany in 1730 when he was about 11 traveling
with his parents, his 17 year old brother, John, his brothers Paul and Leonard,
ages 9 and 7 respectively, and his 4 year old sister. His youngest brother, Christian, had just died on
May 29, 1728. Their ship, The Thistle of Glasgow, took two months and ten
days arriving in Philadelphia on August 29, 1730.(2)
He married Maria Elisabetha
Umbenhauer in Bern Twp, Lancaster Co., PA about 1740
and their six children were all baptized first in the Little Tulip Church
and later in the Moselem Lutheran church in Moselem Springs, Lancaster County, PA.
(3) Maria Elizabeth died sometime after 1749. Johan Georg then remarried to Barbara Abendschon
and in about 1752 they moved to Augusta Co., VA. He had three more
children with Barbara - all born in VA. "George Kepplinger" was on
the Augusta County Virginia Tax list in 1755. He was also a solider from Augusta
in the French and Indian War of 1755. (4)
In 1761 "George Caplinger"
purchased 114 acres of land on the South Branch of the Potomac. (5) "George
Kepplinger" became a naturalized citizen on the 8 or 18th of Feb 1763-64. (6) A
couple of neighbor's estate settlements indicated he had loaned money to them.
For instance the estate of Valentine Cole in 1767 paid George Caplinger £3
11s. (7) Just a year before George died he had purchased another 150 acres
of land. (8) As stated in Robert Caplinger's book, "George Caplinger must have
been fairly well to do for the times. The lands that he owned were in the rich
South Branch valley; he loaned money to his neighbors as we saw from the estate
settlements of Valentine Coil and Mark Miller. His vendue (personal property
sale) listed several books that were sold, which indicates that he was an
educated man. Because of the nature of the books, it is believed that he was a
Lutheran Minister and is referred to as Rev. George Caplinger by researchers."
(9)
He died about 1773 as appraisers to his estate were appointed on May 18, 1773.
He left a fairly large estate. (10) Each of his children received a book:
Leonard Probst (husband of Catherine Elizabeth Caplinger) - one
bible, Jacob Caplinger - Sermon Book, Daniel
Probst (husband of Sophia) - One Prayer Book, Henry Caplinger
- Key of Paradise, Catherine Caplinger - Song Book,
Elizabeth Caplinger - Two Old Books, John
Caplinger - Psalter, George Caplinger - One Prayer
Book with notes, Adam Caplinger - Prayer Book.
Johan Georg
Kepplinger had nine known children. Two of his sons, Samuel and Leonard,
had died before the estate sale. The other seven children (or spouse)
purchased a book from the estate. However, there are also two additional
women named Caplinger buying books. The only times Catherine and Elizabeth
Caplinger are mentioned in the estate sale in in the purchasing of these books.
They may have been granddaughters?
