Heyman Koning

Heyman Koning was baptized 17 Apr 1659 in Well, Maasdriel, Gelderland, Nederland to Aerjan Jansen Cornick and Lyske Damen. (1) Four years later, possibly on his 4th birthday, the family sailed for the New World. He had been baptized on the 17th of Apr and the Bonte Koe sailed on the 16th of Apr 1663.  His older brother, Adam, was eight, Jan six, Heyman, four and Gijsbert one year old. (2)  The baby, Gijsbert, may have died shortly after their arrival, for his parents had another child named Gijsbert baptized in New York on 20 Sep 1665.
On 31 Oct 1683 when he was 24 years old, Heyman Koning married 19 year old Marritje Andries. (3)  Heyman was a mason living on New Street and in 1686 he was involved in the building of the new church in Harlem. 'Harmen' Konning was elected constable of the North Ward of the Bowery Division of the city 29 September 1692 and  'Haman' Koning, bricklayer, was made a Freeman of the City of New York on 30 August 1698. They belonged to the New Amsterdam Reformed Dutch Church and their eight children were all baptized in this church. (5) Heyman and his wife Marritje were often witnesses at the baptisms of their sibling's children. Heyman's sister Lysbeth was a witness for their son Andries in 1687 and they were witnesses for her children in 1689, 1691 and 1696. Heyman's brother Jacob Koning was witness at the birth of their son, Johannes in 1692 and they were witnesses for Jacob's children in 1696,1703 and 1709. Heyman's sister Maria was a witness for their daughter Maria in 1689. Heyman's brother Gerbertje was a witness to their son Abraham in 1694 and Heyman's brother Adam was a witness for Adam in 1696.. Marritje's sister Tietke Andries and her brother Huijbert Andries were also witnesses. (6)
The last time Heyman Koning showed up in the records was for the birth of their last child, Maria, in 1702.  However, Marritje is listed as "Marretie Coning" when she was a witness at the baptism of her sister-in-law's daughter, Johanna Lathen, on 3 Sep 1704.  The next year she was listed as "Marritje Koning, wid." at the baptism of sister's son, Jan Van Pelt, on 15 Aug 1705. Heyman Koning must have died around 1705.

"Tobias Stoutenburgh and 'Hyman Koninck,' masons, were employed in building the new church as Harlem in 1686.  Their contract was for 600 florins.  At the final reckoning on 14 March 1689 their bill was for an additional 12 florins 5 stivers, for extras over and above the contract, and the bill was authorized to be paid.  The total cost of the church was over 2,600 guilders.

The list of members of the New York City Dutch church in the year 1686 included 'Heyman Koning en zyn h. v. Merritje Andries,' whose residence was on Nieuw Straat (New Street.)

'Harmen' Konning was elected constable of the North Ward of the Bowery Division of the city 29 September 1692 and sworn in on 5 October 1692. 'Haman' Koning, bricklayer, was made a Freeman of the City of New York on 30 August 1698."
