compiled by Mary Evelyn Turner in 1973 Samuel Gilkey was 14 years old at the time of his step-father's death, but was of great help in raising the other children. In 1862, Sam Gilkey left home to serve with the Union Army in the War Between the States. On his return he married Olive_______ and set up farming on his own. He was respected and well known throughout Jackson Township and Hamilton County. His farm was noted for the fresh water spring that ran through it and was located where the Cicero Dam now stands. Sam Cade Gilkey went by the name of Cade until early manhood when a tramp stopped by the farm and told him his name was really Gilkey. |

"Nancy Jane Leach Gilkey, B. 26 June 1818 in Ohio, first married Lewman Gilkey,
a
carpenter, of Rockport, Indiana in 1839 and had two children by him. Sara Jane,
B. 1840 in Ohio and Samuel, B. 1841 in Ohio. It is said Lewman Gilkey, a
carpenter,
killed himself, date unknown.
On May 27, 1898, Nancy Jane Leach Gilkey Cade passed away at the home of her
son,
Thomas E. Cade, Jr. on State Road 19 North (where the college now stands) age 79
years, 11 months, 1 day, leaving 4 children, 37 grandchildren and 7 great
grandchildren.
Jane Cade was known throughout her life time for her ability to tell ghost
stories.
To illustrate the hard life lived in this era, Jane Cade told of walking home
through the woods with a tub over her head. Hearing a noise, she turned around
to see a large bear. She threw the tub over the bear, ran into the house,
brought
out a gun and killed the bear."
