Jabez Linnell was born in Barnstable on 31 Jul 1711. His parents were John Linnell and Ruth Davis. (1) He married Sarah Bacon on 11 Nov 1736 in Barnstable. (2) They had six children. (3) Then Sarah must have died since Jabez married widow Sarah Sturges on 26 Sep 1751. (4) She was the widow of Jonathan Sturges. (5)  Jabez Linnell  was a respectable blacksmith in Barnstable had two more children with his second wife and then he died in 1755 at the age of 43 leaving several young children, the youngest under 5 months old.. The court records show that he was a blacksmith and died intestate.  Each of his eight children had a guardian appointed for them in May 1755. Samuel Linnell was appointed guardian to Joseph who was 11 and Elisha who was 16.  Joseph Linnell was appointed guardian to Jane Linnell aged 10.  John Linnell was appointed guardian to John Linnell who was 7.  Oris Bacon, a brother of Sarah Bacon, was appointed guardian of Deborah Linnell who was aged 16.  Robert Davis was appointed administrator and guardian of Mary Linnell who was aged 18 at that time.  The widow Sarah was appointed administrator of her two children, Susannah who was 2 years old and baby Elizabeth who was only 5 months old. "Mr. Jabez Linnel, the youngest son of John, was a respectable man. He inherited his father's dwelling-house on the Davis estate, afterward the property of the late Hezekiah Doane. Mr. Jabez Linnel married Nov. 11, 1736, Sarah Bacon, 3d, and Sept. 26, 1751, Mrs. Sarah Sturgis.  She died Jan. 31, 1768, aged 54. The eight children of this family did not maintain the respectable position in society of the parents. Elisha, one of the sons, born Oct. 20, 1740, was the laziest among the lazy, and he took no offence when reproved for his slothful and vagrant habits.  If such notoriety be an honor, Elisha would have undisputed claim to be called the champion of the lazy."
