Biography of Newell Moulthrop
by Susan Brooke
June 2020

Newell Moulthrop first shows up in the records at his baptism in July 1816 when the "children of Jerry Moulthrop" are being baptized "on his wife's account."  He is the first listed and thus supposed to be born about 1798. He would have been about 18 at the time of his baptism.
The next time he appears is in 1840 for the census of Lancaster, South Carolina.  He is married with two daughters.  His wife, Rebecca, was born in SC so it would appear Newell Moulthrop married there maybe about 1828.  Their first daughter was born in 1830.  He is listed as "employed in manufacture and trade."
By 1850 the family was in Lauderdale, Alabama where Newell is listed as age 52, born in CT, carpenter and his wife Rebecca is 46 born in SC.  Both of the daughters had married and moved out.  Sarah seems to have married at the age of 15, on Dec 21, 1845, to Alfred Twitty.  And Eliza seems to have married at the age of 18, on Sep 15, 1850 to Jesse Mobley.
The Civil War began on April 12, 1861.  These records have not been verified but apparently Newell Moulthrop was killed in battle on June 8, 1863.  His son-in-law Jesse Mobley was killed in battle on June 20, 1864.  There is no trace of his son-in-law Albert Twitty but his wife, Sarah, remarried in 1869.
Newell Moulthrop's widow, Rebecca, was living with her daughter Sarah in 1860 in Lauderdale, Alabama.  In 1870 she was living with the family of John Garrett in Colbert, Alabama.  John Garett's wife Mary, aged 41, is Mary Jennette Twitty, born June 2, 1829, sister to Alfred Twitty.
