Benjamin Pease
by Susan Brooke
Jan 2023
Benjamin Pease was born about 1767. (1) He married Jean Arey, daughter of
Richard Arey on 17 Jun 1697 in Edgartown, Dukes, MA. (2) By 1713 he had
started purchasing many plots of land in Edgartown. There were at least 16
transactions from 1713 to 1748. The only time he sold any land was in
1733. He had purchased the same land from Thomas Pease, Jr. in 1730 for
£20 but was selling this land back to Thomas Pease, Jr. in 1733 for only £17.
However, he must have been doing fairly well as, all in all, he was acquiring
land. (3) Benjamin Pease was named as a "yeoman" as early as 1724.
Yet when he sold his land in 1733, he signed with his mark. He and his
wife, Jean Arey, had 12 children. Then she must have died around 1726 when her
youngest child was about 3 years old. Benjamin Pease remarried to Abiah
Vincent and had 5 more children with her. In 1731 Benjamin and his wife had
their five then youngest children baptized in Edgartown. (4) Some of the
children were named in the land transactions. (5)
Benjamin Pease
was still purchasing land as late as 3 Jan 1748. He must have died shortly
after that purchase since his estate was in probate court in February of that
year. On 11 May 1748 the court ruled that the widow, Abiah, would receive 1/3rd
of the estate valued at £677 9 4.. There were 13 children, but the land
holdings of Benjamin Pease would only accommodate four people. Thus
Benjamin Pease, the eldest son would receive 2/5th of the land. The other
sons, John, Malatiah and Seth, would each receive 1/5 of the lands. These
sons would then pay the other heirs £81 13 3. Seth Pease was younger than
Job Pease, but he still was one of the sons who received land. Job had
moved to CT by the time of his father's death. A daughter, Thankful Pease,
wife of Samuel Trapp, was deceased. Her share was distributed to her
children. All this was recorded in a court appearance on 24 May 1748. ((6)
