Job Pease

According to the Nova Scotia Immigrants lists, Job Pease was born in Edgartown, MA in 1718, son of Benjamin Pease. (1)  He may have been a whaler in Edgartown, Dukes, MA. (2) Job Pease probably married his first wife there. But she may have died leaving him with an infant daughter, Abiah, born in 1742. (3) By 1744 Job Pease was in Connecticut.  He remarried in Lebanon, New London, CT to Eunice Phelps on 4 Feb 1744. (4)  However, he seems to have been residing in Stafford, Hartford, CT.  In May 1745 Job Pease "of Stafford" and David Phelps of Lebanon were exchanging land. (5) His father, Benjamin Pease, died in January or February 1748 in Edgartown and Job received £81 13 3 as his share of the estate. (6) Job was still living in Stafford in 1749 when he purchased land in Hampden Co. MA from Moses Phelps. (7)  In 1751 Job Pease signed a petition for a church in West Stafford. (8) It is not known how long he remained in Stafford, but he sold his land to Moses Phelps in 1751. (9)
Ten years later in  1762 Job Pease was in Yarmouth Township, Nova Scotia. (1) The first year was a brutal winter and he may have left the area for a short time. (10)  But he was a ship builder in Yarmouth  through 1767 and probably longer. (11) The 1787 Division of land has a listing for Job Pease. (11)
However, he was probably back living in Ludlow, Hampshire, MA. He was "of New Concord, CT" in 1778, but "of Ludlow, Hampshire, MA" in1782.  (12)  He was living with or next to his daughter, Kezia married to Samuel Warriner, in the 1790 census of Ludlow. (13) His wife, Eunice Phelps, died on 7 Feb 1791 and is buried in Springfield, Hampshire, MA. (14)  Job Pease remarried the next year to the widow, Abigail Cooley, on 5 Apr 1792. (15) He wrote his will on 9 Oct 1793 naming his oldest son, Job Pease and son Noah Pease.  He also named his daughters: Abiah, wife of Asa Church, Eunice wife of Amon Beebe, Mary wife of Samuel Beebe and Keziah, wife of Samuel Warner. His son Job was named executor. (16) He died two days after writing his will on 11 Oct 1793 and was buried in the Springfield Cemetery (17).

(2) From A Genealogical and Historical Record of the Descendants of John Pease, Sen., Last of Enfield, Conn., compiled by Rev. David Pease and Austin S. Pease, 1869

"Job Pease, son of Benjamin of Martha's Vineyard, was born about 1718. It is said he spent a few of his early years before his final leave of Martha's Vineyard in whaling. In 1745 he had removed to Stafford, CT, a town in Tolland County next east of Somers. He was living there in 1750 with his wife Eunice (Stafford Town Records). It is probably he left Stafford not long after this and removed to Norwich, CT. In 1778 he was living in that part of Norwich called New Concord, and which is now in the town of Bozrah. Not far from this date he removed to Ludlow, Mass., which is the site of the village of Chicopee Falls where he died. His wife Eunice "died Feb. 7th 1791 in the 71st year of her age." (Tombstone in Springfield Cemetery) He married second, Widow Abigail Cooley, 1782. He "died Oct. 11, 1793 in 75th year of his age." (Tombstone in Springfield Cemetery). His will mentions
1. Job, who was executor of the will
2. Noah, who had an equal share with his brother
3. Abiah, the wife of Asa Church
4. Eunice, the wife of Aaron Beebe
5. Keziah, the wife of Samuel Warner

(3) The great granddaughter of Abiah Pease wrote that she was born in July 1742 and that date corresponds with her age at her date of death.  Job Pease didn't marry Eunice Phelps until 4 Feb 1744. He. had a son about 15 months after his marriage to Eunice Phelps.  Findagrave says Job Pease, Jr. was born 13 Jun 1745.  Thus if Abiah was born after Job's marriage to Eunice Phelps in 1744, Abiah Pease would have been born about 1747 and thus only about 13 years old when she married.
