John Peet of Stratford, Connecticut & His Descendants, by Terry Charles Peet, 1986
"John Peet was a husbandman at the time of his embarkation for America on the ship, Hopewell, in 1636. His age given in the ship's register was 38. -- 'Jo. Peat, husbandman of Duffill parish in Derbieshire - 38 years..' "
Ancestry & Descendants of Henry Perkins by Georgiana Hathaway Randall, 1958 pg 125
John was married at least twice and perhaps three times. The only definite
information in the inventory of an Ann Peacke taken in Stratford on April 29,
1687
John is said to have come from Duffield Parish, Derbyshire, England, in the
Hopewell in April 1635, age 38. With him came Mary Peakem age 15, who may have
been his daughter or his sister. It is possible that John knew the Rev. Mr.
Bakeman in England and was influenced by him in his emigrating to New England.
Little is know about John's earliest years in this country. He was in Stratford
Connecticut by 1638-39, where his house lot was #7 on Front Street (now Elm)
looking on Salt Pond.
He was the first sexton and rang the bell in the first meeting house for some
years, giving up the position in 1660 because of his age. No probate of his
estate has been found.
In a Roger's MS in New England Historical Society Library in Bosotn there is a
statement on page 1 that John Peet was married February 16, 1621-22 in Duffield
to Margaret Allecote of Heze
