Nancy Wills Huff

Aug 2013

Family lore says that Nancy's name was "Nancy Wills Huff ".  Her first son was named Jacob Huff Powers. She was born in NJ according to her 1850 census record. (1) She and her husband were living in Cincinnati as early as 1824 when her son Andrew Jackson Powers was born, or possibly earlier since her first two children, Eliza and Jacob Huff Powers are also indicated to have been born in OH. (2) Her daughter, Elmira Powers Stoll, died in July of 1867 and an obituary on her ran six months later in December 1867. In fact it ran twice. It was in the Louisville Daily Democrat on Dec 15 and Dec 17, 1867. It says, "Mrs. Elmira Stoll, wife of Henry Stoll, and daughter of Isaac F and Nancy Powers, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio September 15, 1831," etc. (3)  Elmira's husband, Henry Stoll, was alive at that time and must have given the information for the obituary.
Nancy and their first five children were living with Isaac Powers Sr. in 1830 in Cincinnati. (4) She and her husband Isaac F Powers, moved over the Ohio River to Covington, KY which was then in Campbell Co., KY. He was on the tax records there for 1834 and 1835, but then disappeared from all records. (5)  Isaac Powers Sr. seems to died about the same time. Nancy had 8 children at that time.  Her youngest, Sarah Alice Powers, was born about 1835 which is the time her husband disappeared and probably died. (6)
So, in 1836 when Nancy was left a widow, her daughter, Eliza, was 19 and her oldest son, Jacob, was 18 and Andrew was 12. Undoubtedly the sons were working and helping in her support. Eliza married Leroy Tomlinson, a widower, in 1839. He was boarding with Mrs. Ann Powers on Spring St. in the 1840 city directory for Cincinnati. (7) He was a butcher and probably had considerable influence on his brothers-in-law. They all became butchers and sometime after 1840 they all moved to Louisville to work in the booming meat packing trade.
By 1843 Mrs. Nancy Powers was  in Louisville near Watson's lanyard.   In the 1847 tax records she had four children living with her between the ages of 5-16.  Elmira was about 16.  Isaac Jr was about 15 and Sarah Alice was about 12.  The next year only one child between 5 and 16 was living with her.
Nancy may have been sick with consumption by this time.  Her daughter, Sarah Alice, was off living in Indiana with Susan and Jesse Jones in the 1850 census. Mrs. Nancy Powers died July 22, 1850 of consumption according to the death notice that ran in the Morning Courier. (8) It is interesting that there is a notice to run the notice in the Madison and Cincinnati papers.  Nancy was buried in the family plot in Eastern Cemetery.

(3) Obituary of Elmira Powers Stoll

Mrs. Elmira Stoll, wife of Henry Stoll, and daughter of Isaac F. and Nancy Powers, was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, September 15 1831; was married October 5, 1853 and died in Louisville, Ky., July 14, 1867. She was a woman of lively temperament and cheerful spirits. Fluent in conversation, with a cheerful smile ever playing on her countenance, she was always a pleasant companion in social circles. Social and hospitable in her disposition, she gathered around her a large circle of friends, and to them made her home a pleasant resort.
She united with the Methodist church in her youth and remained a devoted member of the same to the day of her death.
After an illness of several days she died peacefully and in hope of heaven. Her last words were "We all must die; I am prepared". Her departure has made cheerless the home of a bereaved husband, and left three children without a mother's tender care. Her funeral services were attended by a very large concourse of sorrowing friends, at the Shelby Street Church, where she first gave herself to God, and where for many years she had worshiped Him.  She has gone from the Church below to a home on high.
