Samuel Relf Durand:
"Stephen Root was born about 1652 in Farmington, Connecticut, the fifth child of
John and Mary (Kilbourne) Roote. He grew up to be a man six feet six inches
tall. He was a well-built man of Herculean strength and power. Foot racing was
the greatest sport in the early days in New England, and he became the greatest
white racer of his day, only being outrun once by an Indian. He was also noted
as the greatest wrestler in the Connecticut Colony.
In King Philip's Indian War, Stephen Root served under (506) Major Robert Treat
for two and one-half years. He always carried a sword and a huge musket. In the
fight at Fort Narragansett, when the Indian fort was destroyed, he did terrible
execution. He was a man of mighty courage and of sound judgment. He and his five
brothers were known as the 'giants of Connecticut.'
Stephen Root married about 1680, Sarah Wadsworth, daughter of John and Sarah
(Stanley) Wadsworth. She was born November 1, 1659. They had five children, two
boys and then three girls."
