In 1861 William Shaw is 18 years old living with his recently widowed mother in Peel, Wellington, Ontario.  He next shows up as a Hotel Keeper in Drayton, Ontario when he is getting married in 1879.  In 1881 he is listed as "Gentleman" living in Drayton, Wellington Centre, Ontario, with his wife, daughter and mother, Ellen Blair Shaw.  Then 10 years later he and his wife and daughter had moved to Selkirk, Manitoba.  He and his wife are in Oak Lake, Manitoba in 1911 and again in 1916.

Their daughter, Edith Shaw, was living with William's sister, Elizabeth Shaw, in Walla Walla, Washington in 1892 when Edith was 13.
