According to Leonie Doss Cocke in Cockes and Cousins, Obadiah Smith's parents were John Smith and Hannah Dast, who came to Charles City Co., Va, from England. Confirmed by the "old book" of William Smith, son of Obadiah, who states "...this Obadiah Smith was the son of John Smith who's wife's name was Hannah Dast (though it looks like "Dwarf" in the handwriting in the old book - this John Smith came from England and settled in Charles City County in Virginia"

Woman still smooths the anxious Brow of Care,
And sooths our Passion with a pleasing Air,
Without her Man were wretched to Excess,
She heightens Joy and makes our Sorrow less.
