Hattie fell in love with a married man, was sued by the wife for "alienation of affections". Charles Lund divorced his wife, but could not marry in New York as long as his wife was alive. So, the couple eloped to Niagara Falls, Canada. Her mother, Anna Buckingham Whiting, witnessed the marriage license.
