Not much is known about this William Spillman. The death certificate for his grandson, Simeon Spillman, says his father, William Spillman, was born in MD. And we know from an 1816 court order in Scott County, Kentucky that William Spillman's son, William Spillman Jr., was born 1 Apr 1801. So, in 1801 William Spillman Sr. was living in Maryland and he was married sometime before 1801.
The 4 Nov 1816 court order record in Soctt County reads: Court Order BK B -1 pg. 331. "On motion of Benedict Thomas ordered that Wm Spillman orphan of Wm Spillman age 16 1st April next be bound to him according to law to learn the trade of a cabinet-maker." Thus we know William Spillman, Sr. died sometime before that date. He has not been found on any tax record for Scott County however. Either he was too poor to be counted or he didn't move to Scott County until just before he died.
His son, William Spillman Jr., was apprenticed out as a cabinet maker at the age of 16. He did appear on the tax records in 1822-1825 and married sometime during that period. But then he got into trouble probably as a result of a lawsuit in 1825 and by 1831 William Spillman Jr was a pauper. His wife took him to court over custody of his children, but the suit was dismissed. Then in 1838 she remarried leading us to think William Spillman, Jr. may have died. What is interesting is that two years later in 1840 there was another court record indicating a Catherine Spillman was a pauper. She may have been the widow of this William Spillman, Sr.
