SILAS FREDERICK TAGUE
This man being my Father, allows me to be better acquainted with his activities
and life style than those of his immediate family. He was the fifth child born
but the second to live to maturity following his brother, George. Dad was born
normal but became very sickly at a few months of age and remained so until about
age four. It seems his Mother's milk was poisonous to him as she unknowningly
was pregnant with another baby, Uncle Jim, while nursing my Father. This poor
health seemed to follow him for the rest of his life. As a teenager he had a
severe case of typhoid fever but managed to pull through.
Dad had very little formal education. His schooling consisted of a few months
each year during the dead of winter because the rest of the year he was hired
out to farmers for $10 to $15 a month. Dad managed to get a fourth grade
education. He was one of the three sons that bought a home for his Mother while
still in his teens.
As a young man, he learned how to be a successful entrepreneur. By his wits, he
made money as a horse trader and as an operator of concessionary stands at
Fairgrounds and large gatherings. At the turn of the century. while in his early
twenties, he joined in the land rush at Lawton, Oklahoma, and homesteaded land
there. After Dad got the patent to this land he sold it and repeated the same
performance at Strasbourg, Sask. Canada.
At Strasbourg while operating his wheat farm there, he met a little immigrant
Hungarian girl. Barbara Mitrosky, whom he married. I came along the first of
four children.
My parents left Canada and returned to Harlan, Iowa, where my Hungarian born
Mother was not welcomed by my Grandmother. This broke my Father's heart and his
health as well. Dad bought a covered wagon and furnished it like a modern RV,
put Mother and me in it and became a wanderer for many months. They traveled
around through many of the states in America's Heartland before ending up at
Placious, Texas, on the Gulf of Mexico.
While at Placious Texas, my sister Erma, and brother Herbert, were born but my
sick and restless Father took off again. He took his Family and moved to
Medford, Oregon, where he operated a "Woodyard." It was a business of cutting
down trees sawing them up into firewood and selling the firewood to consumers.
Next, he took his Family to Spokane, Washington, did some farming there but
again left, this time for Rockyford, Colorado. Dad's health got worse and worse
but he keep going. His next stop was Sulphur, Okia. where he ended up in a
hospital with an operation. My sister, Tina was born here in 1916. After two
years in Okla. we moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where Dad's health began to
improve. Dad's health got better and better, the climate agreed with him.
Dad spent the rest of his life here in Arizona and as he grew older his health
continued to improve. He was a successful farmer, first growing produce, later
having a citrus grove. He loved hunting and fishing and he and Mother had many
happy years enjoying this sport. Mother lived her life through my Father.
Dad died in 1954 at the age of 76 of a stroke and was buried at Mesa, Arizona.
In spite of years of poor health he was able to leave Mother financially well
off and provided for, exclusive of SSA. He was born on 5 Sep 1878 at Harlan,
Shelby County, Iowa. He married Barbara MITROSKY (3027), daughter of Stephen
MITROSKY (33958) and Veronica VOYTOVIC (33959), on 7 May 1906 at Strasbourg,
Saskatchewan, Canada. He died on 4 Oct 1954 at Phoenix, Arizona, at age 76. He
was buried at Mesa, Arizona.
