George Twyman I

George Twyman came to Virginia on the ship Recovery as an indentured servant to Thomas Lee around 1678.  The court adjudged him to be sixteen years old. (1)  A year later he ran away, but he was brought back, fined, and had his servitude extended by an additional two and a half years. (2)  He probably didn't end his servitude until the mid 1780's.   It is assumed he married about 1697.  His grandson, in his autobiography, identified the wife as Catherine Montague. (3)
George died sometime before March 1, 1703 when administration was granted to his wife Catherine. (4) His old master, Thomas Lee, along with some others, were order to take inventory, however he must have relinquished that right since there are three other names on the recorded inventory.(5)  George Twyman was only about 42 years old.  His grandson says in his autobiography that they lived "near the Rappahannock" and that area was known for massive deaths from consumption.  His son George Twyman II also died young - aged 35.  When George Twyman I died he had three children, the oldest of which was only 5.  His wife must have been pregnant with their fourth child, for there is a record of a baptism in their church for a Peter Twyman just a few months after the inventory was taken. (6)
The inventory was taken on May 3, 1703. It  included 2 yearlings, 1 old mare, 1 old negro man, 1 man servant with 3 years to serve, a parcell of Carpenter and Cooper Tools.  The total  value was £70 18s. (7) His widow Catherine remarried 2 1/2 years later to Phillip Warwick.  He was called into court in 1707 to get security for the orphans of George Twyman, deceased. (8)

"George Twyman was born in 1676.  He died before 3 May 1703 at Middlesex Co., VA.  Christ Church Parish Register records the marriage of Phillip Warwick and Catherine Twymann on 5 sep 1705.  It is highly likely that this is the widow Catherine (Montague) Twyman, who husband George d. before 3 May 1703.  An est. birth date of 1677-1680 fixes her age around the time of the second marriage at 25-28 years.  This range not only fits into the birth space between her siblings, but also places her age at just a year or two younger than her husband's which is generally to be expected.  There were four children b. to Phillip and Catherine Warwick, again based on the Christ Church Parish Records, Thomas b. 1706; Jane b. ? d. 1712; Philip, b. 1715; and John, 1716.  Catherine Warwick was still alive as late as 3 mar 1740 as she is mentioned in Middlesex Co. Orders 1740-1741.  Although there is no direct evidence of this relationship, all other references to Catherine Twyman's appearing in the Middlesex parish and other records are accounted."
