Bernardus Verbryck

The name Verbryck was used by Bernardus Verbruck of Somerset County, NJ (1) And by elimination we can determine this Bernardus Verbryck was the son of  Bernardus Verbryck Sr and Jannetje Schenck. (2) There is no baptismal record  found for this Bernardus Verbryck, but following the naming pattern, he probably was born about 1735.  The first time we can distinguish him from his father is in 1771 when they were building the Neshanic Church in Somerset County, NJ. and he is listed as Bernardus Ver Bryck, Junior, and the only Verbryck family involved with this church was Bernardus Verbryck, Sr.  (3) Bernardus Verbryck, Jr must have married about 1771 since his daughter Sarah was born in 1772.  In 1774 he purchased 181 acres of land from Johannes Vanderveer for 400 pounds fifteen shillings to be paid "on or before the 13th day of May 1775 - with interest." (4)  The Hillsborough "Census" for that same year, 1784, lists him as "V Bryck, Bernardus - 6 white; 3 slaves (182 acres; 4 horses; 9 cattle)." (5)
Bernardus was not as active in civic affairs as his brothers, but still he is found in Hillsborough, Somerset, NJ  as Freeholder and Oversee of the Poor in 1783 and Overseer of the Roads in 1780 and 1786.  On May 5, 1797 Bernardus Verbryck was mortgaging his 181 acres to John Allen.  The mortgage was scheduled to be paid off in three installments with three bonds.  The first bond was for 558 pounds, etc. to be paid  May 1 the ensuing year.   The second bond was for 250 pounds, etc. and due May 1, 1801, and the third bond was for 150 pounds, etc. .due May 1 1803. (6) The deed was  recorded on May 4, 1797 with Bernardus Verbryck and Catharine his wife. (7)    (11) Garrett Brewer had his portion of land surveyed in 1810 (12)

Sources:

(1)  History of the Reformed Church of Tappan, NY, by David Cole 1884  page 47  "In the seventeenth century there lived on Long Island one Samuel Garretson.  He had several sons, the oldest of whom, Bernardus, settled on a farm in Raritan, Somerset Co., N.J., and when the deed for this farm was drawn his family named was changed to Verbryck."   So, we know the name Verbryck originated with this original Bernardus Verbryck.

(2) There is a lot of circumstantial evidence indicating Bernardus Verbryck is the son of Bernardus Verbryck Sr and Jannetie Schenk.

1st. The Dutch had an orderly way of naming their children.  Following this naming pattern Bernardus Verbryck Sr. named his first daughter, Ida, after his mother.  The first son was named Samuel after his father.  The next daughter was named Sarah after Jannetje's mother and the next son was named John after Jannetje's father.  By tradition the third son would have been named Bernardus after his father.

2nd.  In 1771 when building the Neshanic Church, "Bernardus Ver Bryck, Junior"  submitted an account for "various" in the amount of 2 pounds 7 shillings three pence.."   Bernardus Verbryck, Sr. had died in 1768.

3rd.  Bernardus and his wife Catharine were selling land back in Somerset Co. in 1797 which clearly places this Bernardus Verbryck as being from that county.  We know the name Verbryck was used by two brothers, Bernardus Verbryck and his brother Gerritt Gerritson Verbryck.  The only men named Verbryck old enough to have a son of this age were Bernardus Verbryck, Sr., Gerrit Gerritson Verbryck, Bernardus and Jannetje's oldest son, Samuel Verbryck married to Susanna Van der Linde, John Verbryck and  William Verbryck.

Gerrit Gerretson Verbryck did have a son named Bernardus but he seems to have stayed in Somerset Co., NJ and gone by the last name of Gerritson as did all the rest of Gerrit's children.  Samuel Verbryck also did have a son named Bernardus who was born in 1753 but he seems to have stayed in Bergen Co., NJ,  John Verbryck in his will of 1814 mentions two nephews and leaves the bulk of his estate to his step-son.  He appears to have no children. William Verbryck also had a son named Bernardus but he was born in 1781.  The only man who could have passed on the name of Verbryck to this Bernardus Verbryck is Bernardus Verbryck, Sr.
