Rebecca Verbryck
Born: 17 July 1779 Somerset Co.,NJ
When Rebecca Low, widow of William Verbryck, applied for a widow's pension in 1837, they tore out a page of the family bible (seen at left) to prove her marriage to William Verbryck. We do not speak Dutch, but we do think this side of the bible page says in the year 1777 March 20 William Verbryck 39 marries with Rebecca Low 20 years. Then it says 1778 6 of January a daughter is born on a Tuesday --- named Dorete. Then 1779 17 of July --- a daughter named Rebecca. If anyone can translate this Dutch please contact us. The other side of this bible page has some death records.

Somerset County Genealogical Quarterly Volume 3 #2 pg 208

"Bastardy cases brought before Justice Dubois' court (Justice fo the Peace) included the charge against John Pittenger for fornication 'on the body of Rebecca Verbryck 17th September 1798.' "

The Somerset Quarterly goes on to explain. "In order to 'save the township harmless' in supporting an illegitimate child, affidavits were frequently taken from the child's mother as to the identity of child's father."

I found a querry online about a Pittenger family of Baltimore City, Maryland who used the name Verbryck as a middle name.
