"Sarah White, daughter of Peter White and Margaret Stull, was born about 1752 (14) in Frederick (present-day Washington) County, MD.  She was married Dec. 29, 1783 in Washington County, MD to John Wagoner who was born in 1751. (15) They had only one daughter, born near Hagerstown.

  9  1. Margaret Wagoner, b. 1784 or 1785. She married John Kennedy.

Sarah Wagoner received seven acres of 'End of Strife' from the will of her deceased father.  However, between 1797 and 1807, John and Sarah Wagoner purchased the bulk of 'End of Strife,' a 299 acre tract and the original home place of Sarah's parents, from her brothers, Peter and Isaac White.  Soon after the Wagoners probably built the house, now known as 'Ravenswood,' which still stands on this land. (16)

John Wagoner was appointed deputy sheriff of Washington County in 1788 (17) and succeeded Capt. Daniel Stull as high sheriff about 1798.  The Maryland Herald and Elizabeth-Town Advertiser of May 5, 1801 carried an advertisement by J. McPherson noting the establishment of a Scrivener's office 'at the house of John Wagoner (late sheriff's office).' In Apr. of 1802, John Wagoner was collector of the tax for Washington County. (18)

On Oct. 11, 1805, John and Sarah Wagoner received $40 from her sister, Margaret White, as Sarah's share of the personal property of her mother, Margaret White, dec. (19) In 1820 John and Sarah Wagoner were living in the 3rd Election District, Washington County, MD. (20)

John Wagonere executed a will on Nov. 11, 1831 in which he left 'End of Strife' farm to his son-in-law, John Kennedy 'the husband of my late dear deceased daughter Margaret my plantation where I now dwell, lying and being in Washington County, MD situated between Hagerstown and Funkstown containing about three hundred acres more or less....'  Wagoner noted that if his wife Sarah survived him, she was to be cared for by John Kennedy and she was to receive annual money equal to 1/3 of the proceeds of the plantation.  All other estaste was given to John Kennedy except his negroes. (21) '...and none be sold for a longer term and none sold out of the County.'  Wagoner's widow was to receive 1/2 portion of his estate. (22)

John Wagoner died Nov. 21, 1831 at the age of 75.  The Republican Banner noted on Saturday, Nov. 26, 1831.

Died at his residence near Hagerstown, on Monday night last, in the 76th year of his age, after an illness of six weeks, Mr. John Wagoner, an old and respectable inhabitant, and formerly Sheriff of this county.

Sarah Wagoner apparently stayed on the home farm which became the property of her son-in-law, John Kennedy.  She died July 13, 1832 at the age of 80.  The Republican Banner noted on Saturday, July 21, 1832.

Died on Friday, the 13th, inst. near Hagerstown, Mrs. Sarah Wagner, in the 81st year of her age, consort of the late John Wagner, dec'd.

John and Sarah Wagoner were buried in the Presbyterian Church burial ground at Hagerstown.  On May 6, 1913 they were reinterred in a single grace with their daughter and son-in-law in the Rose Hill Cemetery at Hagerstown. (23)

Footnotes

(14) When Sarah died on July 13, 1832 she was in her 81st year, thus 80+ years old.  If born after July 13th, she was born in 1751, but if before July 13th, she was born in 1752.

(15) Although his tombstone, erected in the 20th century, says he was born in 1748, his death notice says he died in 1831 in his 76th year which would indicated a birth date of 1751 unless he was born in December, then 1750.

(16) This farm was located between Hagerstown and Funkstown, MD.  It passed to their daughter and son-in-law in 1831.  In 1847 it passed to the grandson, John Wagoner Kennedy who sold it in 1854 to Jonathan Hager, the miller.
