John Henri Isaac Browere1,2,3
M, b. 18 November 1790, d. 10 September 1834
- Father: Jacob Brouwer
- Mother: Marie Catherine Jeander
- John Henri Isaac Browere was born on 18 November 1790 at 55 Warren St., New York City, New York, (he was not born in 1792 as stated in most biographies).1
- He was baptized on 11 January 1791 at German Reformed Church, New York City, New York, sponsors John Henry Brinckman and Sally Burns.1
- He married Elizabeth Catherine Matlock Derrick on 30 April 1811 Married by E. Williams, a Baptist minister.4
- John Henri Isaac Browere died on 10 September 1834; from cholera.2
- He was baptized as John Henry Brower at some time during his adult life he added an "e" to his surname, adopted the French spelling "Henri" for his middle name and added the second middle name, Isaac.2
- One, undocumented source, states that John Henri Isaac Browere and his wife had eight children.5
- He was a student at Columbia University during 1811, but he did not graduate. He studied drawing with the noted miniaturists Archibald and Alexander Robertson. From 1812 to 1815 he taught school in Tarrytown, New York, then returned to New York City in 1815 to work as a portrait and miniature painter. In about 1817 he left New York for a two year trip through Europe, visiting Italy, France, and England, spending most of the time studying art. His first work of sculpture was a plaster mask of Alexander Hamilton. Browere became a master in the field of plaster masks, developing a lighter plaster that did not flatten the subject's features and which hardened quickly (he closely guarded his formulation, sharing it only with his son Albertus, who in turn passed it along to no one). Between 1817 and 1834 he used his technique to take life masks of several score of America's leading citizens which were then incorporated into portrait busts, among them John and John Quincy Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James and Dolly Madison, Henry Clay, Martin Van Buren, Gilbert Stuart, and the Marquis de Lafayette, who told Browere that it was the only good bust ever made of him. On his deathbed he instructed his family to box up all life masks and store them away for forty years. In 1876, they reappeared when his son Albertus Browere exhibited several of them at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. The New York State Historical Association owns almost all of Browere's surviving sculpted portraits.2
