George Geer1,2

M, b. circa 1621, d. 30 April 1726
  • George Geer was said to be born circa 1621 at Heavitree, Devonshire, England, (no record has been found of his birth).3
  • He married Sarah Allyn, daughter of Robert Allyn and Sarah, at New London, Connecticut, on 17 February 1658/59 (Because of their apparent disparity in age, she may have been a second wife, but there is no trace of any children from a first wife, and the age of George at his death (105) may be overstated).2,4
  • George Geer died on 30 April 1726 at Preston, New London Co., Connecticut.
  • George is believed to have settled at Groton before 1670. In 1705 he is at a town meeting in Groton. George Geer, the fifth townsman, was the only one born in the old country. "He was born in Hevitree, England, in 1621 and must have been eighty-four years of age at the time of his election. He lived to a ripe old age of one hundred and five years." Left an orphan at an early age, he and a brother, Thomas, were put in the charge of an uncle. As the story goes, or so as related in the Geer Genealogy, their uncle apparently gave them little or no education, as even though George did take on positions of public importance later in life, he was unable to write his name, and always signed with a mark. George and Thomas' pressence were in the way of their uncle's claim to their father's property, so he had them sent to New England. The uncle sent them down to a ship Captain who was about to set sail for America with letter requesting that he take the boys with him. George and Thomas were then instructed, by the uncle, to remain aboard the ship while they waited for a reply. Before they knew it, and apparently before the Captain knew it, they were off for America. George and Thomas arrived in Boston, as young teenagers with no family and no money in 1635. They then disapear from any records until 1651, when George appears in New London, the husband of a daughter of Robert Allyn. Thomas appears in Enfield, Connecticut in 1682. George took up a tract of fifty acres of land granted him by the town of New London, and adjoining the farm of his father-in-law, at Allyn's Point. George was buried near the Welcome Browning Farm in an Old Indian Burial Ground, about two mile from where he died. Later, James L. Geer, who lived on the old homestead had a permanent marker made of rough cut stone of Westerly Granite that read, "Our First Ancestor, George Geer, died 1726, age 105, to Mark His Grave." Descendants have spelled the name as Geer, Gere, and Gears. (Walter Geer, The Geer Genealogy, 1923, which includes an ancestry for George Geer back to the 15th century. H. Minot Pitman, "Geer Notes," The American Genealogist vol. 33, no. 4 (Oct 1957) page 193, mentions that no supporting evidence is provided that supports the claimed ancestry).
  • His will was dated on 5 June 1723 "I George Geer, of the town of Groton, now residing in Preston, in the County of New London, in the Colony of Connecticut in New England, being weake in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be giving unto God for it, calling to mind the mortality of my body, and knowing that it is apinted for all men once to dye, do make and ordain this my last will and testaments: That is to say princapally, and first of all, I give and recomend my soul into the hands of God that gave it, and my body I recommend to the earth, to be buried in decent Christian burial, at the descretion of my Executors; and as touching such worly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give, and dispose of the same in the following manner: Imprimis, I give to Sarah, my dearly beloved wife, the use and improvement of one third of my estate during her natural life, and then to be divided among my four daughters, Sarah, Hannah, Margaret and Anne, and my daughter Mary's two daughters, Hannah and Mary, and the rest of my estate I dispose as followeth: To my son Jonathan five shillings, and to my son Joseph five shillings, and to my son Daniel five shillings, and to my son Robert five shillings and to my son Isaac five shillings, and to my son Jeremiah heirs five shillings, which is their full portion with what they have already had. And to my four daughters, and my two granddaughters, Hannah and Mary Mainer all the rest of my estate of cattle and horse kind, and all the moveable goods, to be equaly devided among my four daughters and two granddaughters, Hannah and Mary Mainer shall have their mother's part. And I hereby make and apoint my love son Robert Geer, and my son-in-law Thomas Gates, full and sole Executors of this my last will and testament; hereby making nul and void all former wills and bequeths, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have set my hand and seal." his mark; Thomas Clark, Stephen Gates Witnesses. Presented for probate Jan. 10, 1726-7, in New London. Amount of Inventory of Personal Estate, £48 19s 2d. Jonathan Wickwere and Jacob Parke, appraisers. His will was protested by his son Joseph and son-in-law Zachariah Mainer, who later withdrew their appeal.5
