  • John Hale was born on 21 February 1646/47 at Wethersfield, Hartford Co., Connecticut.1
  • He married Hannah Nott, daughter of Sgt. John Nott and Ann Bellows, at Wethersfield, Hartford Co., Connecticut, on 8 May 1668.2
  • John Hale died on 19 July 1709 at Glastonbury, Hartford Co., Connecticut; aged about 60.1
  • According to D.L. Jacobus, "John Hale was less prominent than his father or brothers, and the reason may be found in a certain sophmoric trait in his character indicated in the following records..." He then quotes from the colonial records a number of accounts where John, as an adult, had to be reprimanded and fined for using adusive language, drinking, playing cards, breaching the peace, and keeping bad company. Finally an incident in which he was accused of speaking evil words against "our Lord the King," landed him in jail for a night. The following day at his hearing, he was accused of swearing against King Charles while at a drinking party. However, some witnesses brought forward would not collaborate the story, instead claiming that John was actually toasting the King when he fell off his stool and then turned to cursing the King as he fell. Apparently those present, developed a convenient uncertainty as to what they witnessed in an effort to help John get off. Evidently the entire experience scared him straight, for it is the last time the name of John Hale appears in the Court's records.2

Samuel Hale1

M, b. circa 1615, d. 9 November 1693
  • Samuel Hale was born circa 1615 at England.1
  • He married first before 1643 Mary Smith, daughter of Rev. Henry Smith and Dorothy.1
  • Samuel Hale married second Phebe Bracy, daughter of Thomas Bracy and Phebe Bisby.1
  • Samuel Hale died on 9 November 1693 at Wethersfield, Hartford Co., Connecticut.1
  • Samuel came to New England, probably by 1634 with his brother Thomas and sister Martha. He was in Hartford, Connecticut in 1635. He volunteered as a soldier in the Pequot War (1637) from there, and for his service received a lot in Soldier's Field, Hartford. On 11 May 1671 he was granted sixty acres of land by the General Court which he in turn gave to his son "Benezer" in his will. He was in Wethersfield shortly after his marriage to Mary Smith, and served on juries there on 4 Sep and 9 Nov 1643. On 4 Dec 1645, he was fined twenty nobles "for mysdemeanor by excesse in drinkeing," but was again called for jury duty on 1 Oct 1646. In 1647 he was selectman of Wethersfield. In 1651, along with his brother Thomas, he joined the first settlers of Norwalk, Connecticut. In 1655 his estate was rated at £250, more than twice that of Thomas's, making him one of the wealthier residents of Norwalk. Samuel was elected to several terms of service of the Connecticut General Court, serving as Deputy in Oct 1656, Feb and Oct 1657, May and Oct 1660. On 8 Mar 1660/1 he sold his homelot in Norwalk to Robert Stewart and returned to Wethersfield, and was Deputy to the General Court for that town in May 1665. While this Samuel Hale is the progenitor of a majority of the Connecticut Hales, he is not the ancestor of the Patriot, Nathan Hale, the state hero of Connecticut who had "but one life to live for his country."2
