  • George Johnson lived his entire life in a log cabin, probably built by Reuben Beeman, which George would have inherited from his father Hiram Johnson. The cabin is in South Bristol, just over the town line from Canandaigua, and was built in about 1826. In 1957, the noted Finger Lakes historian, Arch Merrill wrote a piece for the Rochester Democrat & Chronicle entitled "Rugged Mr. Johnson, 85, Still Lives in Log Cabin." Although the article attributes the building of the cabin to George's grandfather, George Crane (who would have been age 15 in 1826), it briefly mentions not only George Crane, but his father, Elam Crane as well. The cabin has remained in the same family ever since it was built and still stands, and in pretty good condition, in 2006, on the same property now owned by descendants of George Johnson's daughter, Abigail and her husband, Raymond Dutcher. Eunice (Beeman) Dudley recalls summer visits there as a child in the 1920s, when all they ate were wild berries and fresh cows milk. Photos of the cabin (taken in Agust 2006) by Eunice's son Paul Dudley can be seen on his webpage at www.geothings.com/beeman/cabin/.8,9
