Experience Mitchell1,2,3

M, b. circa 1609, d. between 2 June 1685 and 11 May 1689
  • Father*: Thomas Mitchell4 b. c 1566
  • Mother*: Margaret Williams5
  • Experience Mitchell was probably born in circa 1609 at Amsterdam, Holland.6
  • He married Jane Cooke, daughter of Francis Cooke and Hester Mahieu, at Plymouth Colony after 22 May 1627.1,7,6
  • Experience Mitchell married second at Plymouth Colony circa 1640 Mary.8,6
  • Experience Mitchell died between 2 June 1685 and 11 May 1689 at Bridgewater, Massachusetts.6
  • "Almost certainly" the son of Thomas Mitchell, who married first Maria Tromdin, and married second, in Leiden, Holland shortly after 15 Apr 1606, Margrite Williams of Leiden, widow of Christoffel Stochin. Thomas made an affidavit on 15 Aug 1622 in Leiden, Holland, and Wood states that, "It seems very likely he is the father of Experience."
  • George Morton and Experience Mitchell received 8 acres in the 1623 Division of Land as passengers on the Anne. (Experience was probably a teenager living with the Mortons.) He was unmarried in the 22 May 1627 Division of Cattle at Plymouth.6
  • On 9 May 1631 Experience Mitchell sold his dwelling house, garden plot, etc. to Samuel Eddy. This suggests he was at least 21 on that date.6
  • On 8 Jun 1666 John Cooke confirmed to Richard Wright and Thomas Mitchell in equal shares, sixty acres of upland formerly given them by Francis Cooke. On 1 Aug 1672 Thomas Mitchell of Duxbury sold to Richard Wright of Plymouth this grant stating it was given to him by his grandfather, Francis Cooke of Plymouth.6
  • His will was dated on 5 December 1684 at Bridgewater, Massachusetts, proved 4 Sep 1689, names son Edward Mithcell; wife Mary Mitchell; son John; daughters Mary Shaw, Sarah Haward and Hannah Haward; grandson Thomas Mitchell; granddaughter Mary Mitchell. "I leave the dispose of my granddaughter Mary Mitchell with my son Edward and Joseph Bartlett." The inventory was dated 14 May 1689.6
  • There is no proof as to which wife was the mother of Experience's children Sarah, Jacob, Edward, John and Hannah. However, Hannah was born to late to be Jane's child. As only Thomas shared in the Cooke land, doubt is cast on the rest of the children, except Elizabeth who must have been the eldest child as she married in 1645 and Mary who was born so early she must be Jane's daughter. There appears to be a significant gap after Mary, suggesting the rest were not Jane's children.9
