James Morgan1

M, b. circa 1607, d. 1685
  • James Morgan was born circa 1607 at possibly Wales.2
  • He married Margery Hill at Roxbury, Massachusetts, on 6 August 1640.3
  • James Morgan died in 1685 at Groton, New London Co., Connecticut; "ae. 78."4,5
  • He was buried at Spring Grove Cemetery, Hartford, Connecticut.4
  • The emigrant ancestor and progenitor of the Morgan family of the Stonington, Conn. area. He was made a Freeman in Roxbury, Massachusetts 10 May 1645. Early in 1650 he had lands granted him in Prquot, now New London. He occupied a homestead, "on the path to New street or Cape Ann street," as it was called in honor of the Cape Ann Company, who chiefly settled there. On 25 Dec 1656 he sold his homestead and moved, with several others, across the river, upon large tracts of land previously granted them by the town. The spot where he built his first house in Groton in 1657, and where he resided until his death, is a few rods southeast of the dwelling of Elijah S. Morgan, about three miles from Groton ferry, on the road to Poquonock Bridge. He was one of the townsmen or selectmen of New London for several years, and one of the first Deputies sent from New London Plantation to the General Court at Hartford, May 1657, and was chosen as a member of that assembly nine more times, the last time being in 1670. He was also an active and useful member of Rev. Blinman's Church. He served in the early Colonial Wars.
