Hugh Mosher1

M, b. circa 1633, d. before 7 December 1713
  • Hugh Mosher was born circa 1633 according to his testimony on 4 Mar 1662/3, when he said that he was "aged thirty or thereabouts."2
  • He married first before 1665 Rebecca Maxson, daughter of Richard Maxson and Rebecca.2
  • Hugh Mosher married second before 25 February 1708 Sarah Buthcher.2
  • Hugh Mosher died before 7 December 1713 at Newport, Rhode Island.2
  • His estate was probated on 7 December 1713 at Bristol Co., Massachusetts; (will dated 12 Oct 1709) names his wife Sarah, his sons James, John, Nicholas, Joseph and Daniel; grandson Hugh, son of Nicholas; grandsons named Mosher; other grandsons; and mentioned daughters without naming them, although they are named in deeds of land to them.2
  • Called "godson, Hugh Moger, son of brother Nicholas Moger," in the will of Hugh Moger (d.1656). Hugh Mosher first appears in the Rhode Island records in Jun 1660 when he purchased land in Westerly. According to many genealogists (none of whom cites the proof) his sister Mary, married John Maxson, the brother of his wife Rebecca Maxson. Hugh may have lived in Westerly for a time, but in 1669 he was admitted a Freeman of Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Town records show him there in 1668, 1670, 1673, 1676, and 1677. In 1680 he was pastor of the Tiverton Baptist Church, which served Tiverton and Little Compton, Rhode Island. John Harndell's will places him in Portsmouth in 1685, but before 16 Apr 1690 he had moved to Dartmouth, Massachusetts. On that day, John Walley of Bristol Co. wrote to Thomas Hinckley, Gov. of Plymouth Colony, that Hugh, "is a substantial man...whatsoever Mosier doth, he doth publicly, and makes account he can in law answer anything he hath said or done." Deeds show him as a resident of Dartmouth as late as 1708, and one in 1707 calls him a blacksmith. A deed of Dartmouth land dated 1 Mar 1709 gives Newport, Rhode Island as his residence. (The majority of information on Hugh's Mosher descendants was taken from "Descendants of Hugh Mosher and Rebecca Maxson Through Seven Generations).3

James Mosher1,2,3

M, b. circa 1680, d. circa 1768
  • James Mosher was probably born circa 1680 at Rhode Island (probably the youngest in the family).
  • He married Mary Davol, daughter of Jonathan Davol and Marah, at Dartmouth, Bristol Co., Massachusetts, on 22 May 1714.2
  • James Mosher died circa 1768 at Beekman, Dutchess Co., New York.2
  • He is not to be confused with James Mosher of New Shoreham, Rhode Island and New London, Connecticut. James was unmarried when his father made his will and had not been granted land by Hugh. The will, executed by James, bequethed to him all the Mosher land in Newport with house, etc., a house and land in Dartmouth; and land in Westerly. James was probably living in Dartmouth as late as 1722, as his children were registered there to that date. He was of Portsmouth, Rhode Island on 8 Aug 1737, when he sold land in Dartmouth, his wife Mary surrendering her dower 29 Dec. He began paying taxes in Beekman, Dutchess Co., New York in Feb 1744/45, but probably did not settle there before 1748, after his son David married in Dartmouth. He was on the tax list most of the years to 1769; his estate, or possibly that of his son James, was taxed then.2,3

Nicholas Mosher1,2

M, b. 29 December 1596
  • Nicholas Mosher was baptized on 29 December 1596 at Cucklington, Somerset, England.3
  • He married Lydia.4
  • Also known as Moger.5
  • The only records found of Nicholas have been the record of his baptism and his mention in the will of his brother, Hugh Moger of Wincanton. He fits in as the father of Hugh Mosher of Rhode Island, who gave the name Nicholas to his firstborn. Nicholas and his family probably went to Rhode Island before 1660, as Hugh's sister, Mary married John Maxson of Portsmouth about 1665, and on 24 Oct 1677, John Maxson was excused from jury duty because his wife and mother-in-law were both ill, the mother-in-law being Lydia Mosher, a member of the Tiverton Baptist Church in 1680.
In 1836, a notice placed in the Albany Advertiser, and in papers in Washington and Quebec, alerted possible ancestors of Hugh, John and Daniel Mosher to a possible unclaimed estate valued at 32 million pounds. This notice accounts for the inclusion of the probable son Daniel and John, whom by tradition, were said to have been massacred by the Indians, leaving only the descendants of Hugh as possible heirs. The so called "fortune" was probably the property left to Hugh Mosher (Moger) son of Hugh Moger Sr., the brother of Nicholas, who was given five years to claim the property left to him, implying he was off someplace far such as New England (he settled in Maine). Either Nicholas, John or Daniel may have been the ___ Mosier on Manussing Island in Rye, New York, a recent settler, who swore allegiance to Charles II on 26 Jul 1662.6
  • The date of his death has not been discovered.
