  • Thomas Pell came to the American Colonies in 1635, age 22, aboard the Hopewell. He apparently went to Saybrook, Connecticut and served under Capt. Mason in 1637. He was at New Haven by 1642. In 1646 he was sued by Mr. Caffinch for slander. In 1647 he attached £200 of Mr. Selleck's goods. He was not a Puritan, was independent in character, and was useful as a surgeon. He refused to take the Oath of Fidelity at New Haven stating that he had taken the Oath to the King in England and need not take it here. The Court tried to compel him to pay a fine that had been imposed on his wife prior to their marriage, but he refused, and despite the efforts of the Court it was still unpaid in 1650 when he removed to Fairfield, Connecticut. From Fairfield he bought a large tract of land in Westchester County from the Indians.2
  • Thomas Pell served during the Pequot War in 1637. He was magistrate at Fairfield, Connecitcut in May 1661. Deputy for Fairfield in May 1664 and May 1665.2
  • Dr. Thomas Pell and Lucy, moved to Fairfield, Connecticut, with her younger Brewster children, by 1650. In 1654, Mrs. Pell and her daughters Elizabeth and Mary were witnesses in that cause célèbre, the Staples suit against Mr. Ludlow at which time they were not much, if at all, above twenty.1
  • His will was dated on 21 September 1669 proved 30 Sep 1669. Denied natural issue of his body; God has taken to himself my beloved wife, Lucy. Mentions nephew John Pell in Old England, only son of my only brother John Pell, Doctor of Divinity, by his first wife. Mentions his brother John Pell's daughter and if my brother hath a son or sons by his last wife.   • Inventory of estate taken on 30 September 1669 mentions the "Housing, lands, barnes, and Islands adjoining from Hutchinson's River westward, and so far eastward as were Mr. Thomas Pell's just and lawful right." £500. The very extensive inventory amounts to £1,294 14s. 4 1/2 d. Taken by John Richbell, Wm. Haydon and Samuel Drake.3
  • In 1670 his nephew, John Pell, came over from England and sold the Fairfield property inherited under his uncle's will. He settled on the Westchester County property and was the progenitor of the Pells of Pelham Manor.4
