F, b. before 1592
  • Joane Tomes was probably born before 1592.
  • She married William Bigges at Quinton, England, on 24 July 1622.1
  • Siemiatkoski records Joane as a daughter of John Tomes and his first wife Ellen, but gives her a birth date of "ca. 1602" about ten years after Ellen's death. Her father died only ten months after his second marriage, and in that time fathered a son, John, leaving no room for Joane by the second wife (unless she is a twin of John). She places Joane before Alice in the order of birth, which would place her birth before 1592, meaning she married at the comparatively late age of 32 (or more) in 1622.1

John Tompson

M, b. 30 January 1577, d. before 11 April 1627
  • John Tompson was born on 30 January 1577 at Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, England, (this date has not been confirmed).
  • He married first a wife (name unknown).1
  • John Tompson married second at Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, England, before 1 April 1616 Alice Freeman, daughter of Henry Freeman and Margaret Edwards.2
  • John Tompson died before 11 April 1627 at London, England.
  • Also known as John Thompson (the spelling used by 20th century genealogists).3,4,5,6,7
  • Gent. of Little Preston, parish of Preston Capes, co. Northampton.
  • On 1 April 1616 John Thompson of Little Preston in Parish of Preston Capes, co. Northants, gent. and Alice his wife. Moiety of Manor of Saxby, manor house, 4 1/2 yd lands, 3 closes, cottage, third part of Advowson. Uses declared in deed. Consideration: £650.8
  • His will was dated on 6 November 1626 proved 11 Apr 1627. Called John Tompson of Preston Capes, gentleman. Names wife, Alice Tompson, son Thomas Tompson under age 21, and refers to other children but does not name them. Names brothers-in-law William Spencer, a minister, and Henry Freeman, gentleman. Names as executors his wife, Alice, and brother-in-law Thomas Freeman.9
  • Another John Thompson, who later appears in New Haven, Connecticut, has been claimed as a son of this John Tompson. If a son of John Tompson, he would have to be from an earlier marriage, prior to his marriage to Alice Freeman. The identity of his John Thompson's first wife is not known. This John Tompson's will only mentions by name, son Thomas (then underage). However, it does make reference to other children. D.L. Jacobus (Families of Ancient New Haven) shows a John in New Haven with two brothers Anthony and William. Jacobus, however, does not record the parents of the three brothers John, Anthony and William. David Livingstone Parke states that in 1643, Alice Freeman's "family consisted of ten children, John the eldst aged 33, Anthony and William who also settled in New Haven, Mary who married Joseph Wise..." but offers no proof that John, Anthony and William are actually sons of John Tompson or Alice Freeman.
  • John Tompson's ancestry has not been investigated. He did not come to New England.

John Tompson (this he signed his name) of Little Preston, a hamlet in the Parish of Preston Capes, in the County of Northampton, gentleman, made a will dated Nov. 6, 1626, which was proved, P.C.C. on April 11, 1627. He mentions "my wife Alice Tompson," and "my son Thomas Tompson," not then of full age of twenty-one years. He again speaks of "all my children," but does not give their names. To his brothers-in-law William Spencer, a minister, and Henry Freeman, gentleman, he gives all his "messauges, closes, lands, tenements and hereditaments, whatsoever in the town, parish and fields of Woodford-by-Hynten," in Northamptonshire, to be sold "the money there of made to be distrinuted equally amongst all my children except my son Thomas Tompson, and to be paid unto them at their several ages of twenty-one years, or days of marriage." He also mentions his interest in a moiety of the Manor of Saxby and in "other lands, tenements, closes, and hereditaments in Saxby in the County of Leicester." His wife Alice and brother-in-law, Thomas Freeman were made executors.
