Lieut. Thomas Tracy1

M, b. between 1610 and 1620, d. 7 November 1685
  • Lieut. Thomas Tracy was probably born between 1610 and 1620 at England.2
  • He married first say 1641 a wife (name unknown) at Wethersfield or Saybrook, Connecticut.3
  • Lieut. Thomas Tracy married second at Norwich, New London Co., Connecticut, circa 1678/79 Martha Bourne, daughter of Thomas Bourne and Elizabeth, (before 20 Feb 1679/80).4
  • Lieut. Thomas Tracy married third at Norwich, New London Co., Connecticut, before 1683 Mary Foote, daughter of Nathaniel Foote and Elizabeth.5,6
  • Lieut. Thomas Tracy died on 7 November 1685 at Norwich, New London Co., Connecticut.7
  • The parents of Thomas Tracy, and his ancestry, are not known. There have been two published accounts of believed ancestries, both over 100 years old. In 1908, Dwight Tracy authored, Recently Discovered English Ancestry of William Tracy, Governor of Virginia, 1620: and of his only son Lieutenant Thomas Tracy of Salem, Massachusetts and Norwich, Connecticut. In his book, Dwight Tracy, argued that Lieut. Thomas Tracy was a son of the early Virginia colonist. Charles Ripley Steadman in, The Ancestors of Lieutenant Thomas Tracy of Norwich, Connecticut (1895) had previously claimed that Lieut. Thomas Tracy was the son of Sir Paul Tracy (and wife Anne Sharkerley), a son of Richard Tracy of Stanway. Both of these claims propose a Royal Ancestry for Lieut. Thomas Tracy.
Neither claim provided evidence, that would meet modern genealogical standards, which would prove a link between the immigrant, Thomas Tracy, and either of the two proposed ancestries.8,9,10
  • On 2 March 1636 "Tho. Trace" was received as an inhabitant at Salem, Massachusetts, by certificate from Watertown, and was given five acres of land. In a second record he is referred to as a ships carpenter.11
  • On 1 May 1637 Thomas Tracy was among those from John Oldham's settlement at Payquag, or Wethersfield, who served the Connecticut Colony in the Pequot War.12
  • Thomas Tracy, along with Capt. Gardiner, Thomas Leffingwell, and Capt. John Mason, was among the first planters at Saybrook, Connecticut, in 1639.13
  • The town of Norwich, Connecticut was settled in 1659 under the name of Mohegan and received the present name of Norwich in 1662. The original township was much larger than it is currently, it once included part of Preston, including the present township of Griswold, which was set off in 1687.
  • He settled at Norwich, Connecticut, in 1660, and was among the list of those granted the original patent for the Town of Norwich.14
  • Thomas Tracy is mentioned in the will of Joshua Uncas, Sachem, son Uncas, Sachem, dated 29 Feb 1675/6? In which Joshua Uncas bequeaths "all that tracke of land lying to the westward of Appaguage, and Eastward from the Willi mantucke River, South from Appaguage Pond, eight miles broad and according to the Mappe aforesaid, (Viz:) to Capt. John Mason, Capt. Samuel Mason, Mr. Daniel Mason, Mr. James Fitch, Jr., Mr. John Blanchard, Lieut. Thomas Tracy, Thomas Adgate, Simon Huntington, Thomas Leffingwell, Sr., John Olmstead, William Hide, William Backus, Hugh Collins, to be divided and distributed amongst them and every of them as my Father Uncas shall se meet and Convenient."15
