Thomas Wheeler1,2

M, b. 1602, d. 6 March 1686
  • Thomas Wheeler was born in 1602.
  • He married Mary at Lynn, Essex Co., Massachusetts, in 1645.
  • Thomas Wheeler died on 6 March 1686 at North Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut; "aged 84 years."3
  • He was buried at Whitehall Burial Place, New London Co., Connecticut.3
  • "Thomas Wheeler , the ancestor of the Wheeler family of Stonington, Conn., and region round about, was doubtless of English origin, but the place of his birth, and nationality are not certainly known, nor has the time of his migration to this country been ascertained, so as to associate him with any of the passengers of the early emigrant ships. He first appears as a rsident of Lynn, Massachusetts in 1635, where he was elected constable, and later held other official positions. In 1642 he was admitted as a Freeman to the commonwealth of Massachusetts. He purchased large tracts of land there including a mill site where he built and operated a saw and grist mill. During his residence in Lynn he married Mary ___, a young lady of his acquaintance, whose family name is unkown, but our family traditions represent her as a woman of pleasing and attractive accomplishments, and in every way worthy of her liege lord; she graced her domestic duties with cheerful loveliness, filling the home with light and love. They were married in 1645, and became the parents of three children."
Thomas left Lynn. Mass. and moved to Stonington, Conn. in 1667, the same year a close friend, Rev. James Noyes made the same move. There were other Wheeler families living in the Stonington area at the same time Thomas made his move. He was made a Freeman in Connecticut in 1669, and was nominated and elected one of Stonington's representatives to the Connecticut General Court in 1673. He was among those who organized the First Congregational Church of Stonington 3 Jun 1674. Thomas and Issac built a house in North Stonington. Thomas Wheeler left a will, which was lost in a fire when the town of New London was burned by Arnold, 6 Sep 1781. Thomas and Mary are buried in the old Whitehall burial place, situated on the east bank of the Mystic River.4
  • He was a member of the at First Congregational Church, Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut, on 3 June 1674 (original member).5
