John Beeman1

M, b. 24 October 1726, d. 25 October 1776
  • John Beeman was said to be born on 24 October 1726 at Preston, New London Co., Connecticut, (record of birth not found in the Preston, Connecticut records).
  • He married Sarah Thomson, daughter of Daniel Thomson and Sarah Bronson, at Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, on 5 November 1746 Married by Rev. Cyrus Marsh.2,3
  • John Beeman married Elizabeth Drinkwater, daughter of William Drinkwater and Elizabeth Benedict, at Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, on 7 May 1755 Married by Paul Welch, J.P.4,5
  • John Beeman died on 25 October 1776 at Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut.4
  • He may have been the John Beeman who went on the Havana Expedition in 1762. (See Benajah Beeman, 1740-).
  • John Beeman resided in Kent, Connecticut, he was a farmer, and first appears on the tax list there in 1746. He is found on the tax lists at Kent through 1769, and on numerous deeds where he is called, "John Beeman of Kent." A smallpox epidemic raged in Kent from 1773 to 1778 when in East Greenwich Society alone 70 people died, 20% of the population. John Beeman died at this time. The birth records of John Beeman's children are all in Kent Vital Records.6
  • His will was dated on 21 September 1776 at Kent, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, probated 10 Dec 1776 in which he divides his property among his children, naming his wife and brother Ebenezer Beeman as executors. His will names his two eldest children Matthias and Saray "by my first wife" and gave the remainder of his estate "to the children of my second wife" equally except for specific bequests to son Samuel. He named his brother Ebenezer and appointed Nathan Eliot, Noah Murray and widow Elizabeth to administer his estate which proved to be insolvent. Half the homestead farm was bought by Samuel Drinkwater March 1779. His widow was permitted to reside on the homestead for the remainder of her life.
  • Uriah Beaman is claimed as a son of John Beeman Uriah Beeman was born out of wedlock to Silence Herrick who claimed that John Beeman was his father. However, Y-DNA testing of two direct male descendants of Uriah Beeman cast doubt on this claim. While the two match each other, they do not match the Y-DNA test results of five different descendant of Thomas Beeman (father of John Beeman). From this evidence, it appears that Uriah Beeman is not a natural son of John Beeman. A Y-DNA test of a direct descendant of John Beeman is needed to confirm this.7

Joseph Beeman1,2

M, b. 1725/26, d. 19 March 1814
  • Joseph Beeman was born in 1725/26 at Preston, New London Co., Connecticut, (record of birth or baptism not found).3,4
  • He married Catherine Durkee, daughter of Nathaniel Durkee and Mary Baker, at Washington, Litchfield Co., Connecticut, on 28 June 1759.5,6
  • Joseph Beeman died on 19 March 1814 at North Fairfax, Franklin Co., Vermont.7,8
  • He was buried at North Fairfax/Beeman Cemetery, Fairfax, Franklin Co., Vermont.9,8
  • He appeared on the census in 1800 at Fairfax, Franklin Co., Vermont, with a household of 1 male 10-15, 1 male over 45, 1 female 16-25, 1 female 26-44.10
  • "My grandfather, Joseph Beeman, was born in 1725. He was probably a descendent of Gamaliel 1st, but in what line I cannot ascertain certainly. He was a soldier in the French and Indian War, and suffered all the trials and privations and hairbreadth escapes incident to such a war in their campaign of 1755-57. About 1757 (actually June 28, 1759) he married Catherine Durkee. She was a daughter of Jedediah Durkee in the town of Warren, Connecticut. (This is an error. She was the daughter of Nathanial Durkee, and was probably born in Woodbury, Connecticut. She had a brother Jedediah which probably accounts for the error in the name of her father). They had a family of ten children, all of whom lived to have families of their own. The following are the names of the children in order of their birth: Phebe, Mary, Roda, Ruth, Joseph, Susan Jedediah, Asa, Beriah, who was my father, and Catherine. Some were born in Warren (this is an error, the older children were all born in Kent, per Connecticut vital records) and some in Kent to which place he removed and some in Bennington, Vermont where he removed with his family, shortly before the Revolutionary War. He was not a soldier in that war, his age prevented him, but his feelings were strongly in favor of the war and his sympathy was with the cause of freedom for which it was prosectuted. He had no sons old enough to take part in it as his first four children were daughters."
"In the spring of 1786 Joseph Beeman removed to Fairfax, Vermont."
From "Joseph Beeman & Catherine Durkee", by Aaron S. Beeman, grandson of Joseph Beeman, written in November, 1872.2
  • The first settlement in Northern Vermont was made by Joseph Beeman Sr. and Joseph Beeman Jr. They came from Bennington, Vermont in the spring of 1786 on foot. They were carrying upon their backs their provisions and utensils for opening their farms, they built a house of logs, covered it with elm bark, and floored it with bass wood, cleared a small space for corn and turnips and returned to Bennington in autumn. The following year they moved their families here. Mr. Beeman drove a cow which was their main dependence for food, he brought his flour from Bennington, of which he had the first year some 300 to 400 pounds. This year he raised a patch of turnips and a small quantity of corn. The next year son joseph Jr. and Beriah came on and became permanent settlers in the town. Jedediah Beeman from Bennington, Vermont came to Fairfax in 1786 in company with his father and four brothers and located upon the farm occupied (1882) by his son Hubbard and grandson George W. He erected a log house and kept bachelors hall for a time but later married and had a family of three children. One of his grandsons (the son of Hubbard Beeman) was killed at the battle of Gettysburg."11
  • Joseph Beeman resided in Kent, Connecticut, Bennington and Fairfax, Vermont. Farmer. Born 1725 at Preston, Connecticut, and died 19 Mar 1814 (died 4 Sep 1814 L.L. Beeman) at North Fairfax, Vermont, age 88 years, buried in North Fairfax Cemetery. Jpseph married 28 Jun 1759, Catherine Durkee at Washington, Connecticut by Rev. Daniel Brinsmeade. Catherine was the daughter of Nathaniel Durkee and Mary Baker of Judea Society.
Joseph Beeman was a soldier in the French and Indian War, Capt. Hinman's 6th Co. from Woodbury, New Milford and Canaan in 1755 and Capt. Putnam's 4th Co. in 1757 (Conn. His. Soc. Vol I). He was in the army at the unfortunate attempt of Gen. Abercrombie to reduce the Fort of Ticonderoga by general assault without waiting for his artillery to arrive. The army was repulsed with a loss of nearly 2000 killed and wounded. Joseph Beeman's gun was a long large gun, heavily mounted with brass and carried over an ounce ball. It was called the Old King's Arm. He gave it to his son Beriah who gave it to his son Aaron.
In the Colonial Records of Connecticut, 1762-1767, p.172, May 1763, the Society of East Greenwich in Kent represents difficulty of attending public worship in said society and pray to be annexed to the society of New Preston (later Washington). The area of the parish is outlined and one boundry mentions the S.E. corner of the lot where Joseph Beamond now lives. Joseph Beeman was active selling and buying real estate in Kent between 1750 and 1776 where 43 transactions are recorded in his name.
In about 1774 Kent was becoming too crowded for Joseph so he took his family and moved to Bennington, Vermont which was then comparatively new and thinly settled. He settled at the foot of Bennington Mountain and waited out the War of the Revolution, which found him too old to fight, but his feelings were strongly in favor of the war. He had no sons old enough to take part in it, as his first four children were daughters.
In 1786 Joseph became one of the first settlers of Northern Vermont and it is said that he fell the trees where the city of St. Albans now stands (He would have been 61 years old). He was afraid of the malaria being so near Lake Champlain, so he settled on the first range of hills to the east. New York State is across the lake and the Adirondacks are in the distance. On this sightly spot Joseph settled and his sons and daughters with their husbands and wives settled on adjoining farms all about him.1

[S91] Gwen Boyer Bjorkman, compiler, Descendants of Thomas Beeman of Kent, Connecticut (Seattle: Gwen Boyer Bjorkman, 1971), "Family records compiled by George Woodard in 1897, based on earlier work of his father, Ambrose Woodard, who died in 1889, include a marriage of Timothy Tyler to Lucy Beeman, both from Connecticut. Lucy is said to have been born in 1763, died aged 87. The following anecdotes, doubtless much embroidered, are given as to Lucy's early life: When she was about two years old and her parents were away visiting without taking their children, Indians came and planned to kill Lucy for dinner. The children gave the Indians cider from the cellar, and an older girl ran off to tell her parents who returned and killed the Indians. On another occasion, Lucy's father, invited to go on a hunt with an Indian, arrived early at the spot where they were to meet. An old gray-haired man appeared and led Mr. Beeman around a stump. Soon the Indian with whom the hunt was to be made came sneaking around to shoot Mr. Beeman but Mr. Beeman spot him on the spot. Possibly these tales do contain a kernel of truth, namely that the Beemans lived at the time in a community where there were Indians, both friendly and dangerous.
The only Lucy Beeman found in the State Library at Hartford was the daughter of John and Elizabeth Beeman, born at Kent, Conn., 30 July 1766. In the Census of 1744 that town had a population of 1,922, with 62 Indians [inclusive or 'exclusive?] , the largest number of Indians reported for any town in Litchfield County.
. It is shown in Charles S. Grant's interesting book, Democracv in the Frontier Town of Kent (1961) that in the period of Lucy Beeman's childhood there were many Indians in Kent and that they became an economic pro
blem to the Kent people. From 1770 to 1800 Kent became overcrowded and many residents left, a phenomenon doubtless widespread in the older settlements of New England, and poverty was the lot of many of the remaining inhabitants. When John Beeman, for example, died in Kent on 24 Oct. 1776, leaving his wife and, probably, ten children, his estate was insolvent and the property was sold to Samuel Drinkwater, believed to have been a brother gf the widow. In any case, the widow was allowed to live on the land for the rest of her life. No Beemans, however, are listed in Kent in the 1790 Federal Census.
The date of Lucy Beeman's marriage to Timothy Tyler (on him see TAG, supra, 41:245-248) is unknown, but since one of their older children, Sarah, was born in New York State on 23 Feb. 1787, the marriage probably occurred between 1783 and 1786. Lucy (Beeman) Tyler died at Lexington, Greene County, New York, on 15 Sept. 1848, aged 83 (Vital Records), an age in accord, at least approximately, with the birth record of 30 July 1766. In view of the general harmony of all the dates cited and the fact that no other Lucy Beeman has been
found recorded in the vital records of Connecticut town, it seems highly probable that the right identification has been made.     .
From other sources it has been learned that the abovementioned John Beeman was the son of Thomas Beeman and Phebe Parke and that John married at Kent, 7 May 1755, Elizabeth Drinkwater, daughter of William and Elizabeth
    (Benedict) Drinkwater. Their children, all born in Kent, were: (i) William, b. 3 May 1756; (ii)Elizabeth, b. 10 June 1757; (iii) John, b. 8 odt. l758* d. 1 June 1776; (iv) Samuel, b. 3 June 1760; (v) Rachel, b. 9
    March 1762; (vi) Anna, b. 27 Nov. 1764; (vii) Lucy, .
    b. 30 July 1766; (viii) Zilpha, b. 23 May 1768, d. 24
    May 1770; (ix) Andrew, b. 8 June 1769; (x) Thankful,
    b. 16 May 1771; (xi) Liman, b. 8 April 1773; (xii)
    Mary, b. 19 May 1776.     .'     .
[Editor's Note: It would be wise, however, not to press too strongly the point that there were Indians in Kent in 1744, for Mr. Donald Lines Jacobus has given his opinion that the stories of the Indians quoted in the second paragraph of this article do not well fit the si'tuation in Connecticut at this period." Apart from details they do fit, however, what was the situation in Wyoming Valley, now in Pennsylvania but then being fought over by settlers from Connecticut versus Pennsylvanians from the south in the series of wars called "Pennamite-Yankee." The majority of the Connecticut men at Wyoming were from New London and Windham Counties but there were some from Litchfield: County, and for a period the settlements in "Wyomirig" were assumed for administrative purposes to be in Li tchfield County. Had the Beemans been part of one of the pre-Revolutionary settlements in "Wyoming" and then returned to Connecticut, as many did, the stories might have originated then. No Beemans appear, however, in any of the several lists of Wyoming settlers printed in Oscar Jewell Harvey':s magnificent History of WilkesBarre (Wilkes-Barre 1909), vol. 2, a work very inadequately indexed. But this does not rule out the possibility of New York State as the point of origin of the stories. ]
