  2. [S558] Donald Lines Jacobus and Edgar Francis Waterman, Hale, House, p.31. Although no direct proof has been found, it is likely that John Hale's wife was Mary Bevin, whose father Arthur Bevin died in Glastonbury in 1697. Mary Bevin was born 29 Apr 1678, and that is close to the age at death of John Hale's wife as stated on her gravestone. The land of John Hale adjoned that of Arthur Bevin, Jr. in Glastonbury, and he witnessed the deed of Mary's children to her in 1726. Her brothers Thomas and John Bevin settled in East Middletown (now Portland). Mary's son John Hale first bought there from his uncle, Thomas Hale, in 1721, and this deed was witnessed by John and Susanna Bevin, and John Hale in 1747 sold a large acerage to Benjamin Bevin. Mary's son Benoni Hale bought his first land in Middletown in 1726 from Thomas Bevin, who witnessed the sale of his Glastonbury land in 1729.
