William Chesebrough1,2

M, b. circa 1595, d. 9 June 1667
  • William Chesebrough was born circa 1595 at probably Boston, Lincolnshire, England.3
  • He married Anne Stevenson at St. Botolph's Church, Boston, Lincolnshire, England, on 15 December 1620.4,5
  • William Chesebrough died on 9 June 1667 at Stonington, New London Co., Connecticut.5
  • Surname is also spelled Cheeseborough.6
  • Probably born near Boston, Lincolnshire, England where he and his wife were members of St. Botoplh's Church. Only three of William and Anne's 12 children survived to adulthood. He was a gunsmith in England but became a farmer and stock raiser in 1649 in Stonington where he occupied and improved large grants of land given him by the town of Pequot, now New London. He came to Boston, Mass. in 1630 with John Winthrop, and was admitted a Freeman of the Massachusetts Bay Colony in May 1631. He moved to Braintree prior to 1640 and that year was elected deputy to the Massachusetts General Court. Soon after he moved to Rehoboth, Plymouth Colony and was admitted a Freeman there in 1648. He was urged to settle in a new region being settled at Nameaug, afterward called Pequot, by John Winthrop Jr. He found the Pawcatuck region to his liking and settled at the head of Wequetequock Cove, moving his family there in 1649. He traded more or less with the Indians and was also engaged in trade with the people of Long Island and elsewhere. Fearing that he was trading guns with the Indians, he was told at times by the governments in Plymouth, Massachusetts and Connecticut that they disliked his trading with the Indians and was urged to withdraw from the practice. By 1652 the town of Pequot was expanded to include his lands. Subsequently, Massachusetts laid claim to the settlement and the controversy went up to the court of the Commissioners of the United Colonies which in 1658, rewarded all the territory east of the Mystic River to the Massachusetts Colony, under the name of Southertown, and it remained as such until 1662, when it was included in a new charter and agian became part of Connecticut Colony, and now called Stonington. His dwelling house stood on the west side of Wequetequock Cove, near the head of the tide water.1
  • His will was dated on 23 May 1667 written at Stonington, Connecticut. Proved 17 Sep 1667.7
