M, b. circa 1600, d. 27 December 1664
  • He settled at Wethersfield, Connecticut, before 1638.1
  • John Edwards appears often in the Wethersfield town records after 1640. He served on juries twelve times between July 1640 and September 1648. In July 1640 Edwards and Nathaniel Foote were co-defendants in a trespass suit filed by Leonard Chester. In December 1644, John Edwards with John Hollister gave security for Robert Beadle's appearance in court. In march 1645/46, John Edwards and Samuel Ireland's widow, thenthe wife of Robert Burrows of New London presented Ireland's inventory to the court. In March 1655/56 John Edwards was sued by William Gibbon's brother-in-law Luke Hitchcock for a debt, and he was sued in May 1657 by William Gull. John Edwards recorded his three acre lot with house and barn on 26 April 1641 and sold it to John Lattimer in 1654. He was a townsman of Wethersfield in 1648/49 and bought the homestead of his wife's former husband, Abraham Finch, in 1651. He was town Drummer, and care taker of the meeting house in 1659. On 17 August 1658, eleven Wethersfield church members including John Edwards and his wife Dorothy, and 37 non-members, petitioned the General Court for the removal of Rev. John Russell, over Russell'd excommunication of Lt. John Hollister. John's son Thomas Edwards was on Russell's side of the controversy, although when Rev. Russell moved to Hadley, Massachusetts in 1659, Thomas chose to remain in Wethersfield. John Edwards had several land holdings in Wethersfield including lots on the east side of the river in present day Glastonbury.5
  • Inventory of estate taken on 27 December 1664 by the townsmen included his house lot, 60 acres in four parcels on the west side, land on the east side of the river "19 Rods wide," livestock, farm tools, "corne in ye barn," and household items valued at £400, as well as a list of debts to 43 persons totaling £111. Distribution of the remainder of his estate was made on 2 Mar 1664/65 to his widow, to Thomas, John, Joseph, Ruth, Hester, Lydia, and to "Hanna because of her impotency, £30."4
