  • Alice Freeman was born between 1595 and 1600 probably in the area of Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, England. The date of her birth is not known, but based on the dates of birth of her children, and the fact that she did not have any known children after her second marriage in 1644, we can estimate that Alice was probably born abt 1595 to 1600, and maybe a bit earlier.
  • She married first at Preston Capes, Northamptonshire, England, before 1 April 1616 John Tompson.12
  • Alice Freeman married second at Wethersfield, Hartford Co., Connecticut, circa 30 May 1644 Robert Parke, son of Robert Parke and Alice Chaplin.13,14,15
  • Alice Freeman probably died before 1660 at New London Co., Connecticut, (not mentioned in her husband's will).16
  • The baptisms of the children of Alice Freeman and John Thompson are recorded at Preston Capes. Alice came to New England with her children and as a widow. She was first in Roxbury, Massachusetts, then apparently Wethersfield, Connecticut before moving on to Stonington, Connecticut with her second husband. In genealogical circles, Alice is known as the "ur-ancestor" of the Stonington, Connecticut area. Her present day descendants number in the millions, and it is probable that Alice can claim more descendants than any other seventeenth century New England colonist, with the possible exeption of Thomas Dudley, Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony.
  • Kinships between Alice and other American colonial immigrants is explored by Gary Boyd Roberts in "The Mowbray Connection," 7:162-166, 174, 175.17
  • John D. Baldwin in Record of the Descendants of Capt. George Denison... (1881) page 6, states that Alice Freeman, in addition to her daughters, had three sons, John Thompson, Anthony Thompson of New Haven in 1648, and William Thompson who died at New Haven in 1688. None of the three named sons by Baldwin, however, are named in the will of John Thompson.18

About 1985, a new line of descent was published by H.J. Young, in "The Blackmans of Knight's Creek" pp.55-134. This shows descent from Charlemagne through Hugh Capet, King of France, the Counts of Hainault and Clermont, to Joan Bruley and John Danvers whose daughter Amy was the mother of Joan Langston, who married Thomas Giffard. Alice and her descendants are still descended from Charlemagne, but now with a whole different set of ancestors and relations.
    That line described by H.J. Young has also since been disproved as stated here by Gary Boyd Roberts in 2004: "In The Genealogist 4 (1983): 184, note #25, Neil D. Thompson calls to our attention an article by Geoffrey W.S. Barrow in The Scottish Genealogist 25 (1978): 98, which disclaims any connection between Maldred, Lord of Carlisle and Allerdale, to the royal house of Scotland. In addition, the Capetian line via, among other families, Wake and Duston, first posited by George Andrews Moriarty, Jr., and dependent on a stained-glass window inscription, is no longer tenable. A new Carolingian line, via Throckmorton, Spinney, Durvassal, de Camville, counts of Réthel and Namur and dukes of Lower Lorraine, to Louis IV, King of France (d. 954), is mentioned in the 2002 reprint, with addenda, of my 1993 compendium, "The Royal Descents of 500 Immigrants".
