John Brewer of Sudbury be employed as master-workman, on the second building of the 1st Church, Newton [what is now 1st Cong'l Church, Newton Centre]; this building was completed in 1698. Voted, (pounds sterling) 200 for carrying on the work, also for a vane to be provided for the turret of the house. Voted, That the vacant room on the north side be for pews for the women. Voted, That seats for the boys be made in the northeast corner of the house." In 1796, "Voted, To have a stove to warm the meeting-house, and that the Deacons could have liberty to sit out of the deacon's seat if they chose." The first building was erected in 1660 and was standing in 1717. Since then, four others have been built and the sixth is to be begun in 1903."(Brewer Genealogy).

He died 5 May 1709 and is buried in the Farmer's Burying Ground, Watertown.
    "His widow, Mary (Jones) Brewer of Weston, was allowed to keep a public house 15 Dec., 1716. Received her license 9 July, 1717.
    "She administered her husband's estate, "Suretys Messrs. Josiah and Jeames Jones, 'ye widow brothers.'" On 21 April, 1719, part of the estate is granted to John Brewer, the eldest son, to Josiah, sec ond son, and to Daniel Brewer, the third son; two brothers-in-law are also mentioned. See Middlesex Co. Probabe Records, No. 1625.
    "The inventory of the estate amounted to (Pounds Sterling) 598.5s.8d, including farm, 216 acres, a saw-mill and grist-mills. These mills were probably in what is now Waltham (then Watertown), and wer e for seventy, if not one hundred years, all there were in this vicinity.
    "In Middlesex Deeds, Vol. 38, page 140, is recorded 13 June, 1729, John Brewer of Weston, blacksmith, and William Brewer of Weston, blacksmith, Nathaniel Allen, husbandman, and Lydia, his wife, Josep h Merriam and Mary, his wife, and Submit Brewer, children by birth or marriage to John Brewer, late of Weston (or Watertown Farms), sell land in Concord to Daniel Brewer (probably a brother), "being p art of the dower of widow Mary Brewer, deceased, relict of John Brewer."."
