Jane Means Appleton1

F, b. 12 March 1806, d. 2 December 1863
  • Jane Means Appleton was born on 12 March 1806 Hampton, New Hampshire.1
  • She married Franklin Pierce 14th President of the United States (1853-1857), son of Gen. Benjamin Pierce and Anna Kendrick, Amherst, New Hampshire, on 19 November 1834.1
  • Jane Means Appleton was this nation's most tragic First Lady. Known as the "Shadow of the White House," she spent the much four years of her husband's presidency in her room. Her first son Franklin died on the third day after his birth and second son, Frank, died at the age of five. Jane believed their demise was punishment from God for her husband's political involvement, and she convinced her husband to resign from the Senate and return home to New Hampshire. He even turned down President Polk's offer to the post of Attorney General, but then accepted the nomination of the Democratic-Republican Party's presidential candidate in 1852. Jane prayed for his defeat. On a return trip from Boston to New Hampshire in early January 1853, the train the Pierce family was riding on derailed and went over a fifteen foot embankment. Franklin and Jane survived, but son Benjamin was found crushed beneath one of the cars. She never recovered. Jane did not attend Franklin's inauguration and when finally joining him in the White House refused to leave her room. She attended no social functions during her first two years as First Lady. Her aunt, or a close friend, often assumed her role. Jane often sat crying by the fireplace while writing letters to her deceased son, Benjamin and did little to help her beleaguered husband. He was not offered the nomination for a second term. She endured the four year term and upon leaving Washington was so weakened by tuberculosis that she had to be carried out. The Pierces sailed to the Caribbean on board the U.S.S. Powhatan, a government ship loaned to them by President Buchanan seeking relief from the tuberculosis and the chronic depression which had engulfed Jane. She lived almost the rest of her life in Andover, Massachusetts with her sister looking after her until her death at age fifty seven.2,3
  • Jane Means Appleton died on 2 December 1863 Andover, Massachusetts.1
  • She was buried Old North Cemetery, Concord, Merrimack Co., New Hampshire.4
