• Stephen joined his brother in the harnessmaking business in Cortland. He joined the Presbyterian Church at Cortland in 1841. He was a Cortland County Judge in 1859, an Elder in the church and a Sunday School teacher. In 1859 he was charged with covenant breaking and Sabbath desecration after attending lectures by William Lloyd Garrison and Ralph Waldo Emerson, among other abolitionists. After a two day trial Stephen was excommunicated from the church for his insistence on intellectual freedom. He is later listed as a claim agent and dealer in patent rights. No record of him rejoining any church has ever been found. His will included many bequests to family members as well as to the publishers of Free Thought magazine in Chicago and The Truthseeker in New York.²
