  • His will was dated on 13 July 1741 proved 2 Aug 1744, Brunswick Co., Virginia. George Brewer of Brunswick Co., Virginia, being weak in body but of sound mind and memory. Names his wife, Alice; sons William, Oliver, Henry, Nathaniel; daughter Sarah Vick; sons Lanier, George, Nicholas, John, Howl, Henry, Oliver, Nathaniel. Executors: his wife Alice and son Howell. • Henrich Brewer is claimed as a son of George Brewer by Edward Denton in House of Brewer. This assertion is incorrect. Henry is not a son of George Brewer, nor is he descended from the Brewers found in Isle of Wright Co., Virginia.21
  • George Brewer named ten children in his will, but which of his two wives were mother to each is not certain. The birth order of his children is also not known and there is no evidence in his will that they were mentioned in order by their ages. It is likely that the older sons George (b. by 1707), John, Howell and William (likely at least age 16 by 1736), sons Lanier and Nicholas (names associated with the Lanier Family) and daughter Sarah (married by 1741) were children of George Brewer's first wife, Sarah Lanier. The will also mentions "all my younger children that it hath praised God to give me by her (his wife Asice) during her life..." I suspect, although it is not certain, that the "younger children" (children of second wife Alice) are the sons Oliver, Henry and Nathaniel, each of who received land (the older sons did not receive land and were certainly already established with property). Henry, Nathaniel and Oliver each also received a gun (the older, independent sons would have already owned their own gun).22

Broyhill, The Brewer Families of Colonial Virginia, 1626-1776: with notes on the migrations of their descendants into North Carolina and other states (Tullahoma, TN: Brewer Researcher, 1992), At page 90, Broyhill lists ten children for George by his first wife Sarah Lanier, assigning an order and estimated dates of birth to them. He then claims three "younger children" to George and his second wife Alice, naming them Burwell Brewer, Joseph Brewer and Boyce Brewer. Evidence of the three "younger children" has not been found and they cannot be included among George Brewer's children. The order of the first ten was based upon their appearance in George's will, which is not likely accurate. The assigned estimated dates of birth are completely arbitrary and should be discarded.
