James Henry Clay Brewer1

  • He worked as a salesman in a general store in Clearspring and in 1862 helped to organize Company H of the Sixth Maryland Volunteer Infantry of the Sixth Army Corps. He was a second lieutenant and became adjutant of his regiment and later quartermaster. He fought in the Wilderness Campaign, at the battles of Spotsylvania, Cold Harbor, North Anna River, Weldon, Railroad, Monacary, Slicer's Gap, Winchester, Cedar Creek, City Point and Petersburg. He was wounded four time but never seriously. He was the only Union officer present when General Lee delivered his farewell address to his troops. He was mustered out as a Captain at Baltimore on 26 June 1865 and returned to Clearspring where he ran a store.
    In 1871, James, his wife and two small children traveled by train to Lawrence, Kansas, and then by wagon about 115 miles southwest to Peabody, Marion County, Kansas. He opened one of the first general stores in Peabody which he ran for 23 years. In 1895 he conducted a real estate business in the town. He was a Republican, a Mason, and a member of the Military Order of the Loyal Legion, the first commander of the Peabody Post of the Grand Army of the Republic, a member of the city council, a state legislator, and a clerk of the school board.2
