Unfortunately, there were two John BREWERS in early Massachusett s records and each had a son named John and a grandson named John with similar birthdates. Many early researchers confused the families and those errors have been copied time after time.
"The John BREWER who came on the LION was in Cambridge in 1642; his son, John, was in Sudbury bef 1669 and all of his descendants were in Sudbury, Weston, Watertown, Hopkinton, Framingham and town s west of Boston, Massachusetts. John Brewer1,2,3,4

b. between 1745 and 1755, d. before May 1808
  • John Brewer was probably born between 1745 and 1755 in New Jersey or possibly, Pennsylvania (this based upon the birth dates of his children and assuming they were born during the period of his life between the ages of 25 and 50, as is typical).
  • He was said to be born on 26 March 1733 at probably New Jersey This date has never been verified. The origins of this claim are not known and are yet to be found.1,5
  • He married first before 1774 Elsie Lewis, daughter of Edward Lewis.1
  • John Brewer married second circa 1778 Sarah Howell.
  • John Brewer died before May 1808 at possibly Portsmouth Twp., Scioto Co., Ohio; (accounts in the estate records of John Brewer call him deceased in records dated May and September 1808 and 25 Oct 1808).6
  • He is thought to have been a Revolitionary War soldier (this is believed by descendants). A John Brewer served as a Ranger on the Frontiers in Capt. James Leech's Co., Westmorland Co., Pennsylvania. John was living in Westmoreland Co., "Pennsylvania and Virginia Border," at this time. (Note: this service has not been proved to pertain to this John Brewer. There were a number living at the same time in Pennsylvania for whom this service may apply). No pension application filed by John Brewer or any descendant has been found and proof of service cannot be determined with certainty.7,8
  • A John Brewer appeared on the census in 1790 at Bullskin, Fayette Co., Pennsylvania, with a family of 1 male over 16, 1 male under 16, 2 females. The census sheet is arranged alphabetically. This John Brewer family on the census appears to be a younger family than would be expected for this John Brewer. Also John Brewer should have at least two, and possibly three, sons under 16 in 1790.9
  • Adams County, Ohio was created on 10 July 1797.
  • On 18 December 1801 at Adams Co., Ohio, John Brewer was given $6 for killing three old wolves.10
  • Scioto County, Ohio was formed on 24 March 1803, splitting from Adams County, Ohio.
  • In 1806 John Brewer was given a land grant by the Chillicothe (Ohio) Land Office. At the time he was a resident of Scioto Co., Ohio.11
  • Administration of John Brewer's estate was granted on 11 February 1809, at court held at Portsmouth, Ohio. Samuel Lucas appointed administrator of the goods Chattels rights and credits of the estate of John Brewer deceased. Fellowbondsman: William Lucas and Robert Buckles. Henry Hughes, Jacob Groneniger and Daniel Crull senior appointed appraisers of the goods and chattels of the estate of John Brewer deceased.6
  • Inventory of estate taken on 3 April 1809 total $501.87 1/2. The amount kept by the widow at the appraised value, $166.75. Certified by Samuel Lucas, administrator of the estate of John Brewer, deceased.6
  • On 7 March 1812 John Brewer of Scioto County has a grant for his land patent recorded in the Scioto County Deeds records. (Note: this date is more than three years after his death, it is likely that the request to record the patent was made by his heirs).12
  • On 13 March 1816 John Brewer of Scioto Co, Derrick Brewer of Scioto Co., James Brewer of Scioto Co., Sarah Brewer of Scioto Co., Elsey Plowman of Scioto Co. (heirs of John Brewer, dec'd), convey to William Swords of Scioto Co.13
  • On 19 December 1818 In a deed, Richard Brewer and Christianna his wife, John Brewer and Lavina his wife, James Brewer, Sarah Brewer, Nancy Brewer, Alcy Plowman late Alcy Brewer and William Smith and Polly his wife late Polly Black heirs at law of John Brewer deceased, conveyed property of one hundred and a half, be it more or less, acres in Scioto County, Ohio, to David Crull, Jr.14
  • DNA testing of a descendant of John Brewer demonstrates that John Brewer is a descendant of Jan Brouwer (Kit no. 60686 at the Brewer DNA Project). For a more complete analysis of John Brewer's possible placement among the descendants of Jan Brouwer see Richard Brewer's website, "Brewer Descendants of Johannes (Jan) Brouwer" under the page titled "Speculation."1,15
  • John Brewer and Daniel Embody, each have descendants that appear to be closely related. DNA testing of direct male descendants, carried out through the Brewer DNA Project, has demonstrated that direct descendants of Daniel Embody and John Brewer share a common ancestor within a meaningful genealogical time period. It is apparent that the descendants, through their respective earliest known ancestors, are descended from Jan Brouwer of Flatlands. (See the DNA Analysis page of the Brouwer Genealogy Database website).16
  • John Brewer and John Rose, each have descendants that appear to be closely related. DNA testing of direct male descendants, carried out through the Brewer DNA Project, has demonstrated that direct descendants of John Rose and John Brewer share a common ancestor within a meaningful genealogical time period. It is apparent that the descendants, through their respective earliest known ancestors, are descended from Jan Brouwer of Flatlands. (See the DNA Analysis page of the Brouwer Genealogy Database website).16
  • William Brewer is claimed as a son of John Brewer however, William is NOT mentioned in the 1818 deed of the HEIRS of John Brewer. (This father-son relationship is not likely). A William Brewer (under age 14) heir of John Brewer, was placed under the guardianship of Charles Brewer on 17 Apr 1811 (Scioto Co. Court). However, there is no evidence to support the claim that the two William Brewers are the same man.17
  • John Brewer is a possible son of Jacob Brouwer. Based upon what is currently known, Jacob is a possible father of John Brewer. It is noted that John did name a son, Jacob; a daughter, Mary; and a son, Richard (the equivalent of Dirck). However, it must be emphasized: this possible father-son relationship has NOT been confirmed or proved.

These descendants carrying the Rose and Embody surnames are clearly very closely related genetically to the descendants of John Brewer (b. 1733 , who married Elsie Dunbar), the patriarch of the JOHN BREWER branch. They show exact 37/37 as well as 36/37 marker matches indicating they are tightly related (very few people achieve this close level of a match) and 35/37 marker matches which also indicates a close relationship. It is believed that Brewer children, related to John/Elsie Brewer, were taken in by the Rose and Embody families and they took those surnames as their own.
