Eleven children blessed their parents' married life, ten of whom survive, and of these, John, the subject of this sketch, was the seventh child. His father remained in New York until his death in 1847, but his widow survived until the 15 th of July, 1879, when she passed away in Chariton county. In 1856, Mr. John Brewer, leaving home, went to Illinois, where he remained for twenty years, at the expiration of which time he came to this county, as above mentioned, in 1875. Then he settled on his present place of residence which consists of 255 acres of fine land, well improved and well adapted for the raising of stock, which he follows in connection with farming. In 1857 Mr. Brewer was married in Adams county, Illinois, to Miss Cornelia Totten, a daughter of Lafferd Totten. To them were born four children, all of whom are living: William G., Ella M., John F. and Freddie F. William G. was united in marriage on the 19 th of October, 1881, with Emma Girvin, daughter of John Girvin, of Chariton county, and on October 20, 1881, Ella M. became the wife of R. T. Girvin, of the same family. Mr. John Brewer and wife are members of the M. E. Church. Politically, he is a Republican."2
