  • The Elmira Star Gazette, September 1, 1910, covering the 26th Brewer family reunion, included the following, erroneous, account of the families origins: "The members of the Brewer family of various names, through marriage are descendents of Hendrick Brewer, who came to America before the Revolution and purchased 160 acres of land on Manhattan Island where Trinity Church now stands. He had seven sons who served in Washington’s army. Two of his grandsons, Johnson and William Brewer; Sons of Johnson Brewer, came from Fishkill Landing to Trumansburg, Tompkins County, New York, when this section of the country was called the “West.”" (While William and Johnson/Johnston or Jonathan did go to Tompkins County from Fishkill, they were sons of Hendrick/Henry Brouwer, who was not an immigrant, rather was likely a 3rd great-grandson of Adam Brouwer. He never owned 160 acres on Manhattan Island).11

Mr. Jennings had thought from his earliest recollection that there were four markers. Three markers are legible and the partial remains of a fourth marker were found. The fourth marker was a double marker with inscriptions on both the left and right sides, perhaps for two children. The marker was almost entirely illegible and the other portion of the markerdwas not located. A date of 1861 on left and either the month of Apr or Aug on vight. Markers copied June 1987 by J.   • Abdicated On 16 and 17 October 1859, Joseph Brua (the name he used for himself) found himself in the middle of the action during John Brown's ill fated raid on the arsenal at Harper's Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia). Joseph was one of John Brown's hostages during the standoff with the local militia. Despite this, Joseph risked his own life to rescue one of Brown's wounded men in the street, carrying him into the Weger House Hotel then keeping his promise to his captors to return as a hostage. Joseph Brua subsequently was a witness at the trial that condemed John Brown to hang.1

Before the war he was a farmer and land records show him as owning land on Lot 4, 3rd Division, along with his father and his brothers Lester and Hiram. Battles in which the First Vermont Cavalry participated and, it is assumed, in which Joseph fought. The unit was composed of mostly men from Franklin Co., with a few from Grand Isle Co.: 1863 - 1 Apr., Broad Run, VA; 30 May, Greenwich, VA; 20 Jun., Hanover, PA; 2 Jul, Huntsville, PA; 3 Jul., Gettysburg, PA; 4 Jul., Montery, PA; 5 JUl., Lyatusville, PA; 6 Jul., Hagerstown, MD (time of capture)."8
