Serring Brewer1

b. 1803, d. between 1870 and 1880
  • Serring Brewer was born in 1803 at Highgate, Franklin Co., Vermont.
  • He probably died between 1870 and 1880 apparently unmarried.
  • He appeared on the census in 1860 at Albany, Green Co., Wisconsin, "Scering Brewer" age 58, living in the home of his presumed brother Jeremiah. Serring's occupation is recorded as farmer.2
  • In 1870, an "S. Brewer," age 69 (birthplace left blank) is living in Mt. Pleasant (Albany Post Office), Green Co., Wisconsin. He is enumerated in the "County Poor House," with Geo. Bennett as the head of household.3
  • Serring seems to be the most elusive of the children (and supposed children) of Jeremiah Brewer. He has not been located in a search of the 1850 census (when he would have been in his late forties), in 1860 he is living with Jeremiah Brewer, and in 1870 he is probably the "S. Brewer" found in the poor house in Green County, Wisconsin. He is not found in a search of the 1880 census, and it is conceivable he died during the decade of the 1870s when he would have been in his seventies (death records prior to 1907 in Wisconsin, particularly in Green Co., are sparse). From what is known thus far, it appears that Serring did not marry.
  • Serring is probably a son of Jeremiah Brewer, he is almost certainly a brother of Jeremiah Brewer (b.1802, d.1898) in fact they may possibly be twins (they were at the most, born a year apart). In 1860 he is living with Jeremiah's son Jeremiah in Albany, Wisconsin. Serring's name is said to have appeared frequently in a ledger believed to have belonged first to Jeremiah Brewer, and then continued by his son Jeremiah, Jr. (1802-1898) when the families lived in Petersburg, New York. A photograph of Serring Brewer, ca. the 1870s exists, a copy in the possession of Chris Chester, obtained from family descendant Carol Sherer, via Karen Sims (2006).

  • Seth Wales Brewer's obituary appeared in a local South Dakota newspaper: "Sanborn Resident - S.W. Brewer of Elliott, Died at His Home Last Friday, July 6th - Buried at Woonsocket - Came to Datka Territory in 1882 and Has Resided On Old Homestead Ever Since. The funeral services were held Sunday at 12 o'clock at the home in Elliott township and at 1 o'clock at the Methodist Church in Woonsocket, the funeral sermon being preached by Rev. F.W. Cannon, pastor of the church. Burial was made in Eventide Cemetery in Woonsocket. The funeral was very largely attended, Mr. Brewer being very well and favorably known and being one of the very early residents of Sanborn county. - Obituary of Seth Wales Brewer: Seth Wales Brewer, one of the earliest pioneers of Sanborn county was born January 21, 1851 in Highgate Township, Franklin County, Vermont, and died at his home 11 miles southwest of Woonsocket, South Dakota, on July 6, 1934, at the age of 83 years, 5 months, and 15 days. Seth Wales was the youngest of a family of ten children, having eight brothers and one sister, none of whom survive. His father, Jacob Brewer, and mother Jerisha Westover, migrated with their family from Vermont to Wisconsin when he was three years old. They moved across country by covered wagon and across the Great Lakes by boat, finally settling at Johnson's Creek near Jefferson, Wisconsin, 40 miles west of Milwaukee. The family lived there for 14 years and when Seth Wales was 17 years old they moved to Nashua, in Floyd County, Iowa, near Charles City. At the age of 23 he was united in marriage to Louvica Shannon. Eight children were born, four of whom died in infancy during a scourge of black diphtheria. In the fall of 1882 he came to the Dakota Territory, and took up land in Elliott Township, Sanborn County, 10 miles northwest of Letcher, S.D. Letcher at that time was at the end of the railroad into that part of the territory. In the spring of 1883 his family joined him on the homestead where he lived continuously until his demise. Mrs. Brewer preceeded him in death, having passed away in 1925.4

  16. [S2644] Chester Collection of Unpublished Genealogy Related Material and Correspondence, Chris Chester, Kent, New York, unknown repository memo, E-Folder no. 2916, Stephen Brewer-Mary Whitsett, 2009. E-mail received from Charles Wells, Dec. 29, 2009, "Stephen Brewer" :Recently I came across a article, written by Milton (not my Milton), but of John (Aaron's brother) and son of Stephen. Following is the part that covers Stephen. " Stephen Brewer, grandfather of Milton, was born in a suburb of New York City, and served in the Revolutionary War as a teamster. His father, Stephen by name, was also a soldier in the Revolutionary War. The wife of the last named died, and he was obliged to take his son to war with him because he had no place to send him. The son entered the struggle at the age of 11 years and remained in the service until the close of the war. He was then engaged in boating on the Delaware River for several years, after which he learned the trade of Cooper. He moved to Fayette County, Indiana where he plied his trade for several years and then located at Delaware (County?)* Indiana. He also worked at his trade in Yorktown, and the last years of his life were spent with his childern in Grant County, Indiana. His wife was Margaret Whitesides, by whom he had the following children: Louisa (Born in Kenticky)*, Lucinda (Born in Kentucky)*, John (born in Kentucky)*, (Milton, probably born in Kentucky but died in Delaware County, IN)*, Emily (born in Kentucky)*, Stephen, and Aaron. Both parents were Baptists in religious belief. The mothe died in 1899 at the age of seventy eight years." The starred items are my additions. The article is in the Biographical Record, the section covering leading citizens of Sedgwick County, Kansas. It was published by the Biographical Publishing Company of Chicago, Illinois in 1901. Milton's writeup is on page 469. I t can be found at openlibrary.org/b/OL22852066M.
