  • Jeremiah Brower and Jacob Brimmer, both of Hoosick, New York, filed their respective Loyalist claims on the same day in Bennington, Vermont.
  • Jacob filed a Loyalist Claim with the British Government on 1 May 1786, signed at Bennington, Vermont on 13 Mar 1786, witnessed by Isaac Tishman, Justice. He cites as evidences to his claims John Hendrick Westinghoven of Pownal, Vermont; Peter Creller at Missico in Canada (the Missico r. enters Highgate, VT from Sheldon, and runs through to Swanton); Mr. Daniel Carr, one of the 62nd Co. of ___, now at Cataraqui; Mr. Ellasander Nicholson at Cataraqui; Liuet. Sam Ross in Canada; and David Goff of Pownal, Vermont. In his claim, Jacob states that he took active part in the "army of his Majesty in the action at Bennington as a part of General Burgoyne's Army against the Americans on the 16th day of August 1777." He states that after the British troops were defeated and driven away, he fled into the woods for saftey, then returned to his family at Hoosick, where he found that the Americans did not know of his having gone off to join the British Army. Having heard how the effects of those that were known to have joined the British were carried off and destroyed, he decided to stay at home and "run the risk of what might happen." However, even though the Americans found him at home, he was suspected of being loyal to the British since he had not joined with the Americans during the fight. Jacob then lists the items that were pillaged and taken from him including 4 horses, 3 cows, 24 sheep, 1 grindstone, 3 augers, carpenters tools, drawing knife, plow irons, wool, a gun and powderhorn, and that he was fined $16 "for not going against the British." Jacob states that during the "late dessentions in America he acted the part of a faithful subject to his Majesties Government," and he lived in a remote place by where no country road went. It was a place where those upon service sought shelter and assistance "on which your memorialist was very attentive and helpful, in consequence of which he was greatly impovershed."1
