  • 29 Feb 1685/86 Mary Britton, widow, made a deed to her son, Nathaniel, (for the value of a bond due her son to Paulle Richardes, Merchant of New York), for land adjoining Sarah Whitman's land. Witnessed by Thomas Lovelace and Thomas Waltone.4
  • On 3 August 1694 Nathaniel Britton, Sr., and Mary, his wife, of Richmond County, sold to Steven Mahaullt, 1/2 of lot 40, boounded by that of Sarah Seidmore, and others, and some salt and fresh meadows.1
  • On 28 October 1695 Obadiah Holmes and Elizabeth, his wife, of Salem County, New Jersey, sold to Nathaniel Britton, Sr., of Richmond County, 96 acres at New Dorp, formerly called the "Governor's Lot," and some marsh and meadow. This land was acquired on 29 Sep 1677, when Gov. Edmund Andros granted by patent to Obadiah Holmes a tract of 96 acres of upland and 12 avres of adjacent meadow, known as the "Governor's Lot."1

  • Also known as Nicholas Brittain.5
  • In 1709 Nicholas received a deed from Ann Van Pelt for her 1/3 interest in the Billiou-Stillwell property, she making a reservation of a place to dwell. In 1713, Rachel Britton transferred her share to Nicholas without reservation.1
  • His will was dated on 5 January 1740/41 proved 27 Feb 1740/41. Nicholas Brittain of Richmond County, Gent., being very sick. My wife Francke is to have a good and sufficient maintainance, and to be furnished with good clothes, and a good horse and saddle when she wants to go abroad, also a negro man, with the proviso that she surrender and relinquish the 60 acres of land that she claims to be her own. I leave to my two daughters, Martha Moore and Rachel Brittain, all my lands, messuages, and tenements, and other estate, and they are to pay my son Nathaniel's 3 daughters, Mary, Francke and Natalie Brittain, £50 each when of age. They are also to give Randal Slive, my apprentice, a good horse, saddle and bridle. I make Samuel Moore and Samuel Holmes, and my two daughters, executors. Witnesses: Richard Stillwell, Vincent Fountain, Salem Comes.5
  • The Billiou-Stillwell house, located at 1476 Richmond Road in Dongan Hills (Staten Island), was built about 1670 by Pierre Billiou. It was enlarged by Thomas Stillwell about 1680, and may have been enlarged further by Nicholas Britten. It was restored in 1943-1951 by the Staten Island Historical Society.1

  • In 1691 A patent for land was granted to William Britton who "was in possession and so remained until he (meaning his son?) sold the property in 1719." This patent for land at New Dorp was dated 28 Sep, in the 3rd year of the reign of William and Mary (1691/2). (An earlier patent, dated 14 July 1691, was revoked in 1692). William filed a petition in 1694 for a grant of land, and in the same year he petitioned for and obtained permission to build a tide mill on Guyon's Creek.1
  • In 1701 William was one of the Protestant petitioners of Richmond County to King William III.1

Before coming to Staten Island, William Britton and Nicholas Britton had taken part on non-conformist religious services on Long Island. William was on Staten Island by 1676. His wife, Maria, and seven children were baptized at the Flatlands Dutch Church on July 14, 1678.3
  • In 1676 Nathaniel Britton brought a law suit against William Britton and Nathan Whitman for pulling up part of the common fence of the town of Dover, Staten Island, and removing it for their own use, which the court ordered replaced.3
