Femmetje Brouwer1,2

b. 1 December 1723, d. February 1788
  • Femmetje Brouwer was baptized on 1 December 1723 at Dutch Reformed Church, Hackensack, Bergen Co., New Jersey, sponsors Jurrie Brouwer, Elisabeth, his wife.2
  • She married John Henry Gesner, son of Johan Hendrick Gesner and Anna Elizabeth, at Lutheran Church, New York City, New York, in 1744 "5th Sunday after Easter and two other church days. B. at Hakkinsack, Joh. Hinr. Gissinger and Femmetje Brouwer, young people of Tappan."3
  • Femmetje Brouwer died in February 1788 at Tappan, Rockland Co., New York.4
  • She was buried at Gesner Burying Ground, near Tappan, (now Rockland Co.), New York.5
  • Also known as Famitcha Brower.4
  • She witnessed the baptism of Jannetye Churchwell , daughter of John Churchwell and Jannetje Brouwer, on 25 February 1753 at Tappan Reformed Church, Tappan, New York, (sponsors Jan Gisner, & wife Femmetye).6
  • Femmetje Brouwer witnessed the baptism of Jannetje Brouwer , daughter of Isaac Brouwer and Jacomyntje Quackenbosch, on 4 April 1756 at Tappan Reformed Church, Tappan, New York, (sponsors Jan Gisner, & wife Femmetye).7
  • Femmetje Brouwer witnessed the baptism of Femmetje Brouwer , daughter of Jacob Brouwer and Elsye Hitchcock, on 15 October 1758 at Tappan Reformed Church, Tappan, New York, (sponsors Jan Gisner, & wife Femmetye).8
  • Femmetje Brouwer witnessed the baptism of John Lawrence , son of William Lawrence and Rachel Brouwer, on 5 July 1759 at Tappan Reformed Church, Tappan, New York, (sponsors Jan Gissener, & wife Femmetje).9
  • Gesner Family of New York and Nova Scotia, by Anton T. Gesner (1912) incorrectly places Famitcha Brower as a grand-daughter of Jacob Brower and Anneke Bogardus, thus incorrectly showing a descent from Anneke Jans and Dom. Everardus Bogardus. This is corrected in NYG&BR 64:125, in NYG&BR 69:177, and in "Brouwer Beginnings" (TAG 24:168).
  • William J. Hoffman assigns the death of a daughter of Adolphus Brouwer to Lena (Lea). The death, by rattle-snake bite, occurred in early June and if this daughter was in fact Lena, she would have been only four months old. The report of the death, as published in The Boston Weekly Post-Boy, June 11, 1739, however, reads as follows: "New York, June 4. Last Week a young Woman, the daughter of Adolph Brower, of Hackensack was bit in three different places by a Rattle-Snake, as she was gathering Straw berries; the injected venom operated so speedy that she died in a few Hours."
This account does not describe a four month old infant. An infant would not have been called a "young Woman," and a four month old would certainly have not been out picking strawberries. A footnote to this a reprint of this article as found in Documents Relating to the Colonial History of the State of New Jersey; Extracts from American Newspapers, relating to New Jersey, 1704-1775, Vol. 2, pages 571-572, adds, "Doubtless Femmetje, daughter of Adolf Brouwer and Jannestie Verdon, baptized in the Hackensack church 1 December 1723."
The problem here of course is that Femmetje is then claimed to be the wife of John Gesner and if this is correct she could not have died in 1739.10

Gerrit Brouwer

b. before 1726
  • Gerrit Brouwer was probably born before 1726.
  • He witnessed the baptism of Gerrit Brouwer , son of Abraham Brouwer and Elizabeth Ackerman, on 10 January 1742 at Dutch Reformed Church, Hackensack, Bergen Co., New Jersey, (sponsors Gerrit Brouwer, Jenneke Brouwer).1
  • Possible son, but of which of Uldrick Brouwer's wives cannot be determined with certainty. Gerrit Brouwer stood as sponser for a baptism within this family and this is the only record of him known thus far. No previously known "Gerrit Brouwer" can be identified as a possible sponsor. The name Gerrit is found in Adriantje Pieterse family (he mother being Lysbeth Gerritse) and this is a consideration in the tentative placement of Gerrit in this family.
